During the 2016 bipartisan stubborn refusal to avoid a complete federal budget shutdown, Democratic senator Luke Healy get, through their father, his sister Laurel, who is otherwise stuck to finance her next non-commercial TV documentary project, to accept a six month job as his assistant for constituency voters affairs. She ignores that one apparently -like most- absurd request about a ship crew member missing from a ship relates to the politically exiting matter passing her. Gareth Ritter, the bright right hand of lush Republican senator Red Wheatus, offers his vote for a budget compromise in exchange for e mere $48 million for the autism program Ritter's sister depends on. Alas Luke and his Democratic colleagues decide to wait until a short shutdown has harmed the Republican image, during which the Smithsonian also had to close its operations, even one coordinated with a Russian institute diving in Siberia. That allows the ant-like (alien?) critters from the meteorite the ship transported to escape all over D.C. and start their parasitic attacks on sleeping people, like senator Wheatus, cutting out part of their brains. Laurel meanwhile catches and scolds her brother for sex with a political acquaintance, despite an unsuspecting pregnant wife.
