Spooky cycling
Being a huge 'Scooby Doo' fan for goodness knows how long, any new show, special or film would be watched with great anticipation. While 'Scooby Doo Where Are You' is still the jewel of the crown of the franchise, it was interesting to see 'Scooby Doo' rendered in Lego.
'Lego Scooby Doo', as said with the previous episodes, was something found quite by accident after watching the short special 'Knight Time Terror' and the two Lego-rendered 'Scooby Doo' films 'Haunted Hollywood' and 'Blowout Beach Bash'. After being pleasantly surprised by 'Knight Time Terror' and 'Blowout Beach Bash' (was mixed on 'Haunted Hollywood'), it made me interested to see more Lego 'Scooby Doo', having seen other films lately following the Lego animation trend and doing it remarkably well. They are very short episodes, but is quite an interesting little series even if different than expected.
"Ghouls on Wheels" may not be one of the best episodes of 'Lego Scooby Doo' and the weakest of the series up to this very early point. It's still good though, despite being too short, too rushed and the story feeling like just a climax of an episode with the rest of the episode missing. But at least all the gang are here and the atmosphere is as ever spooky and fun. Of the three episodes up to this point in 'Lego Scooby Doo' it is the only one with an unmasking and to feel a little more like a proper mystery so that was interesting.
The antics are endearingly goofy, the way the lighthouse keeper is caught is inventive and the villain is creepy enough. The end pun is very corny, but the clever thing is that the episode actually acknowledges with the reaction of the gang how bad it is.
Story-wise, "Ghouls on Wheels" isn't perfect but it is an entertaining minute's worth of your time with nice, affectionate interaction with the gang, amusing dialogue and a spooky atmosphere.
Animation-wise, the animation is very nicely done. It's very colourful and atmospheric and the music is dynamic and whimsical with a nice haunted house vibe too with the main theme. Voice acting is good.
In conclusion, another good 'Lego Scooby Doo' episode but not one of the best of the series. 7/10 Bethany Cox
