Made in someone's kitchen one afternoon...

Warning: Spoilers
Somebody's idea of a homemade horror movie, MEAT PIE MASSACRE is what happens when a couple of teenagers decide to buy a video camera and shoot a film in their kitchen. It's literally as simplistic as that, and extremely stilted and unprofessional in terms of editing, shooting styles, and direction. It goes without saying that the acting is really bad too - characters simply read bland dialogue from cards kept just off camera, and you cringe every time Aaron Hilberdink speaks.

The story is a simple re-tread of the old Sweeney Todd legend told in an unrealistic way. There are a few random inserts of gore effects which look like they were filmed in somebody's garage and a couple of stalk and slash moments in the woods. It's not even cheesy, it's just really, really bad, and why an amateur film like this would even get publicity beyond the circle of friends who made it is a mystery to me.

Awful Editing and Performances Hamper Film

Meat Pie Massacre (2015)

* (out of 4)

Carrie (Aaron Hilberdink) is a psycho who is murdering people in her town and using their flesh to sell to the bakery as meat pies. Her brother (Alex DiSanto) is pretty much being held hostage by her evil deeds but when he strikes up a new relationship with a local girl this sets off his sister.

MEAT PIE MASSACRE is an amateur movie from DiSanto and for the most part it is a pretty awful film. I've been going through all sorts of these low-budget movies and I must say that with a few changes this here could have been better but as it stands the film is pretty bad on most levels. The story is obviously a take off on the Sweeney Todd story but that's not the problem.

The problem is that the editing and performances are so bad that it's impossible to really get caught up with anything in the story. I rarely talk about editing but it was so awful here that it really ruined the movie and especially the way the scenes just cut back and forth between people talking. At some points it's so fast that you'll get a headache just watching the picture. It certainly doesn't help that the actors are reading their lines so fast that it's clear they're just trying to get them out before messing up the take. There's certainly no emotion to anything they're saying.

These two things really hamper this movie but you can tell that the filmmaker is a fan of the genre. At least the murders are done in a gory fashion and I actually thought the opening sequence was good for what it was. I'd also argue that throwing in the VHS of Lucio Fulci's ZOMBIE and having a poster hanging up of PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE were a nice touch.
