The cult is just a prop
26 November 2016 | by (Singapore) – See all my reviews

It would be an abuse of your viewing privileges if you watched this show to learn what it is like to be a part of a cult. There is very little offered which might satisfy voyeuristic needs or gratuitous tendencies. Instead, the cult is really just a backdrop, a canvas that allows the drama of everyday life to be portrayed. Even if he or she is not a member of a cult or any religious group for that matter, every human being has to confront his or her own social unsociability -- the question of belonging and otherness -- the need to be with people which then gives rise to the paradoxical quest for self.

For the viewer interested in teasing out the many knots that make up this gigantic theme, 'The Path' offers an interesting and thoughtful take. And perhaps because it is so deliberately intellectual, the show managed to attract a stellar cast. All the people involved in this production are the sort of actor who only really want to do something worthwhile. They do not want to make your laugh or gasp, they want to make you think. So it is understandable why some people may not like this.

Perhaps because it is trying to reach for higher standards, that sense of naive simplicity so essential to great productions like 'Breaking Bad' or 'Game of Thrones' is not there. But unlike many shows that try to do more than just entertain, 'The Path' manages to avoid being irritatingly preachy. The material is presented and the viewer is free to judge.

I watch a lot of TV shows and would say that this one is definitely worth your time. It does offer some tits and ass and there will no doubt be women who will watch this because Hugh Dancy takes his shirt off often enough, but it is much more than a flesh parade.

A good effort for a project that got off the ground only because we live today in what some might call the golden age of TV.
