Kingsman 2 Beats It at the Box Office with $39M

1 hour ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

As expected, after two weekends of box office dominance, New Line Cinema's It remake was finally dethroned. While it came in far lower than most projections, 20th Century Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle took the top spot at the box office with $39 million. Also as expected, Kingsman 2 easily beat its fellow newcomers The Lego Ninjago Movie and Friend Request, although they both came in far lower than most projections.

Box Office Mojo reports that Kingsman 2 opened in 4,003 theaters for a solid $9,743 per-screen average. While some had projected it to open in the $50 million range, the Kingsman sequel still managed to out-gross its predecessor, which opened with $36.2 million en route to a $128.2 million domestic debut and $414.3 million worldwide from an $81 million budget. The sequel was produced under a $104 million budget, but with its $61.2 million foreign debut, for a worldwide tally of $100.2 million, it's already very close to breaking even. »

‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Suits Up At The Multiplex [Box Office]

2 hours ago | The Playlist | See recent The Playlist news »

All summer long, audiences were wary of sequels and reboots, with many underperforming or outright tanking. And while Fox will likely wind up being happy with the numbers for “Kingsman: The Golden Circle,” it’s safe to say they were hoping for a slightly better result.

The sequel founds its way to the top of the box office this weekend, knocking out two-week champion “It.” Earning $39 million, Matthew Vaughn‘s R-rated flick only did slightly better than the $36 million bow of ‘The Secret Service’ two years ago.

'Kingsman 2' Finishes #1 as September Grosses Near Record High

2 hours ago | Box Office Mojo | See recent BoxOfficeMojo.com news »

The weekend's new releases fell shy of Mojo's weekend forecast, but Kingsman: The Golden Circle still managed to debut larger than the original, finishing in the #1 spot. Unfortunately, The Lego Ninjago Film fell well short of expectations as did Friend Request, which delivered a mere $2.4 million opening. There were, however, some bright spots among limited release titles as Battle of the Sexes and Victoria and Abdul delivered strong opening results as September's calendar grosses continue to pace toward record heights. Topping the box office was Fox's Kingsman: The Golden Circle, delivering an estimated $39 million from 4,003 theaters. The opening improves on the $36.2 million opening for the first film, but the film's performance over the next couple of weeks will tell the true story. The first Kingsman turned its $36 million debut into a $128 million domestic run, a 3.54x multiplier. Should Golden Circle follow suit we're talking about a $138+ million domestic run, which »

Weekend Box Office: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Leads the Pack

3 hours ago | Collider.com | See recent Collider.com news »

Kingsman: The Golden Circle will not quite reach the $40 million-plus high estimates that many box office prognosticators had hoped for but it will nevertheless hold the top spot for the weekend with an estimable $39 million. That's about $3 million up from the first Kingsman movie's opening weekend but this bump barely signals a growing fanbase. The Golden Circle cost a little over $100 million to make as compared to the $81 million that it cost to make Kingsman: The Secret Service, and the announced third film will likely cost even more. My skepticism over how … »

Box Office: ‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Unseats ‘It’ as ‘Lego Ninjago’ Disappoints

4 hours ago | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Kingsman: The Golden Circle” is the new ruler of the box office.

The sequel from Fox is expected to earn $39 million this weekend from 4,003 locations. That’s slightly below where tracking had pegged it (somewhere in the $40 millions), but above the original “Kingsman” movie, which earned $36.2 million when it opened in 2015.

“Kingsman” is also launching to about $61 million from 64 markets abroad, giving it a $100 million worldwide opening. The audience was male-dominated (58%) and 60% of viewers were between 18 and 34 years old. The sequel received mixed reviews (a 51% score on Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences earned it a B+ CinemaScore, which is the same as the original “Kingsman.” Imax screens accounted for $3.5 million of “Kingsman’s” domestic earnings and $9.2 million of its global grosses.

‘Kingsman: The Golden Circle’ Tops ‘It’ at Box Office With $39 Million Opening

4 hours ago | The Wrap | See recent The Wrap news »

20th Century Fox’s “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” took the No. 1 spot at the box office from “It” this weekend with an estimated $39 million opening from 4,003 locations. It’s a solid opening that’s slightly above the $36.2 million opening made by the spy sequel’s predecessor, “Kingsman: The Secret Service,” and just a step below pre-weekend projections of $40 million. “The Golden Circle” had a much more mixed critical reception than “Secret Service” did, earning 51 percent on Rotten Tomatoes  compared to its predecessor’s 74 percent. But audiences were kinder to the film, giving it a B+ on CinemaScore. Overseas, »

Weekend Box Office: 'Kingsman 2' Dethrones 'It' With $39M; 'Ninjago' Stumbles

5 hours ago | The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News | See recent The Hollywood Reporter - Movie News news »

It was a mixed bag at the box office this weekend.

Director Matthew Vaughn's Kingsman: The Golden Circle easily won the race in North America, grossing $39 million from 4,003 theaters. That was somewhat behind expectations, although the sequel still scored one of the best openings for the month of September, as well as came in ahead of the first Kingsman: The Secret Service ($36.2 million). Heading into the weekend, however, tracking had suggested the cheeky spy action-comedy would clear $40 million.

Overseas, Kingsman 2 kicked off with $61 million for a global total of $100 million.

Why Are Audiences Gravitating Towards Genre Subversions?

George Chrysostomou on audiences gravitating towards genre subversions…

This month marks the release of Kingsman: The Golden Circle, the sequel to the surprise hit Kingsman: The Secret Service and it is of course just as genre bending as its predecessor. The franchise clearly plays off of some of the silliness of the Bond movies, with their own versions of Q and M, high-tech if not slightly unbelievable gadgets, egotistical villains spouting monologues about grand world domination plans and of course, the classic suited look of the MI6 Spy, complete with beautiful car and in this case, umbrella! Of course, the original pokes fun at the James Bond movies, at one point asking for a martini that is “Gin, not vodka, obviously. Stirred for 10 seconds while glancing at an unopened bottle of vermouth.” Audiences were captivated by this fun take on the classic genre and with the sequel projected to do well at the box office, »
