Sex-heavy gay riff on CHRISTINE
A guy buys a rundown car leading to lots of sweaty sex in STICK SHIFT, a very modest riff on CHRISTINE that jettisons plot in place of copious copulation.
Michael Vincent stars as a nerdy nebbish (it's fun to see that old Hollywood chestnut - slapping a pair of glasses on a drop-dead knockout to make them into a "nerd" -replicated and gender-swapped here) who wanders into a SoCal auto dealership and impulsively purchases a dirty, beat-up old Firebird. Taking it home and giving it a quick spit-polish, Mike's got the thing looking good as new within a few minutes, and he christens it "Chris," I presume in a nod to John Carpenter's then-pretty-recent CHRISTINE. It's not long 'til the newly refurbished vehicle starts granting his wishes, and of course they summon forth the hot, man-on-man action that makes up the rest of the picture.
Vintage porn connoisseurs often find themselves on the defensive, trying to combat the general public's "wakka-wakka" stereotypes about the genre, but sometimes the clichés are right on the money. Everything you'd expect is accounted for in STICK SHIFT - it's cheaply produced on video, the plot is nonexistent, the sex kicks off at the drop of a hat, and generally the entire film is about as far removed from art as possible - this is straight-up porn, pure and simple.
So how's the sex? At least on that level, the film manages to deliver. The guys are voracious, and generally at least one in every scene is worth keeping an eye on. While basically the definition of a SoCal himbo, Vincent is easy on the eyes and takes to his scenes with gusto, though it's actually a knockout solo number toward the beginning that may claim first place in your memory. In general, the film at least tries to push beyond completely rote F&S, and features a great guy-on-guy-on-guy chain-bang toward the middle, a bit of sexy jockstrap action, and some of the more committed fellatio this side of Linda Lovelace. Things finish strong in the final scene, where blond, boy-next-door heartbreaker Jamie Bleu threatens to steal the show. His apparent initial reluctance toward oral eventually gives way to some championship bottoming, and while Vincent may be the ostensible star, it's this young fella who really stood out to me. While it's always fun trying to find some kind of outsider art even in this most maudit of genres, sometimes a porn flick is just a porn flick. On that base level alone, STICK SHIFT delivers.
