The Making of City of the Living Dead (2010)

Another excellent documentary from Blue Underground takes a look at the making of CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD, the 1980 horror film from Lucio Fulci. Interviewed here are star Catriona MacColl, co-star Michele Soavi, camera operator Roberto Forges Davanzati, cinematographer Sergio Salvati, production designer Massimo Antonello Geleng, assistant makeup effects artist Rosario Prestopino and special effects artist Gino De Rossi.
At 32-minutes there's quite a bit of information given about the making of the film including how the locations were picked and how Fulci had to make it look dirtier by using fog at night and dust during the day. There's also a funny story about getting permits to try and shoot something in a cemetery. From here we learn about the casting and the really bad blood between Fulci and Christpher George. This leads to a very funny story dealing with a bit of revenge that George got on the Italian director. From here the majority of the running time deals with the special effects or the more notorious moments in the film. This includes the maggot scene, the gut puking sequence and of course the drill-to-the-head sequence.
Fans of Fulci and CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD are really going to enjoy this because it really gives you an excellent idea of the various stages of production. We're given some terrific stories and there's no question that learning about how the special effects were done is the highlight.
