"Spaghetti Western" is a cinematic genre that originated when stories set in the American West began being made by European, especially Italian, film companies. It began as a term of derision first used by critics but later became a term of endearment by the fans of these movies.
Staple tropes of the genre include stories of black and grey morality involving characters who employ superhuman gunslinger skills and sparse, but potent, dialog while drifting through desolate desert settings. In stark contrast to typical American Westerns, the characters are often grimy and forlorn with little regard for proper etiquette or personal hygiene. Anachronistic, surreal and fantastic elements are frequently present with historical accuracy being of subsidiary concern. Spaghetti Westerns are typically filmed with no synchronous audio track (MOS) resulting in completely re-recorded dialog (ADR) and sound effects (Foley).
