Have Faith
ThomasDrufke2 November 2015
Tonight's episode is centered on characters having faith in Supergirl to save the city and be who Superman is. While I think it was probably a little too early on in the show to tackle the media's opinion on Supergirl, the faith angle is something that can be applied to Supergirl as an entire show. So far, I haven't been too impressed by the show, but I still have faith that it can be a solid show. I don't think it has the fluidity or the likable characters of Arrow or The Flash but it does seem to be more focused than a show like Gotham. It's important that this show doesn't try to do too much.

I think everything was toned down a little bit here. Cat Grant is still un-watchable at times, it was however funny to hear Cat Grant say "Sick of hearing about the Man of Steel", which is something I think every viewer is thinking. But the over the top comedy mixed with the Full House cheesiness seems to be gone or at least significantly less present than last week. I still don't buy into the fact that Winn can hack into whatever the heck he was hacking into. Nor do I understand exactly the importance of Hank Henshaw's group to this show, but I'm willing to hang in there and give it a shot. I am however more interested in Kara's aunt and the potential enhanced presence of Maxwell Lord. Lord is a big character in the comics and is a potential villain that would make sense for Supergirl. That is if they make him a physical match.

Speaking of physical matches, I'm glad to see this show is using Kryptonite upfront because it's really the only way to humanize a Kryptonian. I'm hoping that they focus more on Kara vs these type of obstacles instead of the city's opinion of her. I understand it needs to eventually be addressed, but that whole story line this week felt rushed. It was like the city hated her one second and the next they loved her. In a normal world that would likely be more of a gradual thing.

The effects continue to impress at least for a TV show. I think the show looks twice as good as The Flash, probably due to a bigger budget. Still, it's something Supergirl deserves at least a little bit of credit. I am however skeptical of the decision to have the same actress play both Kara's aunt and mother. I understand they are twins, but I think it could get confusing for some viewers. I also don't think the show needed to reveal anything about Hank Henshaw this early on. Save that for a more dramatic time later. Overall though, it was an improvement over last week, but still a long way to go.

+Effects

+Potential villains

+Acknowledging the excessive Superman references is annoying

+Everything was toned down a bit..

-..Except for Cat Grant

-Revealing Henshaw a little early

-Gaining the city's trust back was too easy

Potential trouble ahead
tc-405 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I think the show has had a solid start, and I am enjoying that it has a traditional superhero feel to it, like Flash does. However, I can see some potential problems ahead, largely caused by the insistence of DC (or WB, whoever made the decision) to insist on complete separation of their movie and TV stories. I get that Supergirl is trying to become a hero without bothering her cousin all the time, and that's a good thing. But rogue Kryptonians (and I expect there will be more than one that have come out of the Phantom Zone)? That is exactly the type of scenario that Superman would end up getting involved in, so for him not to be involved is going to stretch credibility - especially as he is being mentioned so often. Knowing that it's most unlikely that Superman will be able to guest star in the season finale (but maybe I'm wrong about that) I would have thought that there are plenty of other credible threats that the show-runners could have gone with that aren't going to need Superman. And, as an aside, when did Jimmy Olsen learn Superman's secret identity?

I just miss Superman.

1x02 - Stronger Together

MINI PLOT:

Alex Danvers & Hank Hershaw want to know the limits of Kara's powers & they want to help her train to become a better hero. Kara gets emotional when Alex beats her butt to prove a point that she is not ready to go out a face the big bad guys.

Supergirl gets bad press when she tries to save oil from exploding at the docks, but she makes it worst. She confides in Jimmy & Winn that she wants to help the little people so that Supergirl can get better press.

Some insect guy kidnaps Alex. Kara saves her. We found out that Kara's mom was a twin & she imprisoned her twin sister.

My limits have been reached & I am going to go ahead & cop out of watching this series. I am usually a person that has a high threshold of cringe, but I had to stop watching this because my cringe was at an ultimate high.

Melissa Benoist. I want to like Supergirl, but I feel no connection to her. Honestly, I cannot take her seriously. I look at Supergirl & keep wishing I could see Superman or I just have the urge to watch Smallville again.

Also, I got really mad when Kara said the S stood for Stronger Together. S stand for Hope, girl. I know that should not upset me off, but Man of Steel is my favorite comic book movie & everything about the movie is the law. Ha. Crazy... but that is how I feel.

Mehcad Brooks. I love you, but I just cannot do this. I will be tuning in when Superman comes through because I can never miss when my favorite superhero pops up in (mostly) any version. Also, I want to see who Chris Woods is & his scenes because I love his acting. I might give the show another chance depending on how these episodes that I want to see goes.

Not Sure About A Few Things
slightlymad2211 January 2017
The second episode of Supergirl continues the trend of the first episode.

Plot In A Paragraph: after few mishaps Kara/Supergirl must put doubts aside as she tries to apprehend an escapee from the Kryptonian prison; Cat (Calista Flockhart) pressures James (Mehcad Brooks) for an interview with Supergirl.

This episode is quite light in tone, especially early on when Supergirl, despite her best intentions keeps having mishaps and making things worse.

I'm still not sure about the new James Olsen. And I'm not a fan of him and Winslow (the real Jimmy Olsen) battling for Kara's affections Benoist is fine, but it's Calista Flockhart who dominates this show!! She steals every scene she is in and the show is poorer when she is not on the screen.

Is there an award for worst new series?
A_Different_Drummer3 November 2015
The thrust of many of my TV reviews has been about the astonishing increase in quality of made-for-TV content generally, while truth be told there are now major problems in Hollywood doing decent product that makes money.

This trend is clear and obvious -- Vikings, Banshee, Suits, Blacklist, Good Wife ... it is a long list and, given how badly produced TV content was just a decade ago, it is almost a miracle worthy of investigation by a team from Rome.

And then we have Supergirl. Seriously, can there be a more obvious example of old vs. new? The scripts are among the worst in recent memory. Not only does little happen in each episode but the dialog that the actors are forced to mouth is ... terrible.

Only Calista Flockhart takes the weak script and turns a sow's ear into a silk purse. She is the ONLY reason to watch the show.

And BTW there is something not quite right about the producers giving a full episode writing credit to Shuster and Siegal, both of whom have been deceased for almost 20 years...?
