Legendary scenes!
Extinctive13 July 2015
The scene where Tom Connoly and the judge have their conversation, now there's some smart writing! Then, after that, when the same judge in court tries to speak his mind about it, absolutely brilliant scene. This series keeps amazing me!

For these scenes alone, this episode gets a 10 from me. Their acting is superb too by the way.

In addition, the music and score of this series, whoever are behind that are very much deserving of awards if there ever were any.

Then the Red and Lizzie conversation at the end, contemplating the burden of guilt, responsibility and atonement. Wonderfully done. We (the audience) have speculated on this before, that Red helps Lizzie because he feels he owes her a debt: That doesn't mean he killed her father, but that he feels responsible for the loss she suffered - her father may still have been a friend of partner of Red's, or his asset or contact, not necessarily an enemy. And Lizzie - quick-to-judge, holier-than-thou Lizzie - sat there and saw the way her life mirrored the actions that she was so quick to condemn in Red. Great find.

did not see that coming...

Warning: Spoilers
Reviewers generally like to be entertained.

Old reviewers like to be surprised.

In my review of the prior episode I did not pull any punches. The producers were playing games which one does not expect of professionals at their level.

What I did not expect, what I have never seen before, is to follow up a "clip" or "recycled footage" episode with one of the strongest entries in the series so far.

The beauty here is that things are happening at so many levels, what you see, and and what you intuit.

The speech given by the angry judge who is forced to free Elizabeth could be an editorial on the current mis-use of power worldwide by clandestine services.

The speech given by the asst AG when he says goodbye to Cooper and makes it clear that not only does he have no morals, he NEVER HAD ANY, and that is his best asset working is Washington....

And the speech at the very end by Red to Elizabeth about her good deed for another hits the bullseye on the secondary arc that this series has been nursing since day #1

Great episode. Did not see that coming

Revelations galore
nycweboy111 February 2021
An episode where "not much happens" but the revelations of character and underlying motives is profound. That the show takes a breath to acknowledge a needless death, accounts for it, and uses it as a moment to redefine so many characters and reveal their feelings and motivations... is why The Blacklist is such compelling television.

Those Lines !!
qbogammaz2 July 2017
Dear Mr. James Spader ,,,

This is a fan mail coming to you from across the globe. All the way from Kuwait. In shorts am a father of two beautiful girls. Sarah and lujain. They are the pearl of me. Their mother is no longer my wife. I feel nothing but guilt to have ended the marriage with their mother three years ago. Yet I found a way passed it.

Children are resilient. They will find a way to cope with it. Yes, they do live in a comfort. I do provide for all that they need. Passage through life. Made by my guilt. For not being strong enough for them. Those were my thoughts. Until episode Tom Keen of season two of the black list. Your performance in delivering those lines of how about guilt would consume you. That was nothing less of an award winning performance. Thank you from the edge of the planet. All the way from Kuwait.

A tremendous show
fillweb24 October 2015
I have never been a fan of this type of show. I have seen a NCIS show once or twice. Loved the "Audrey Hepburn" bit. But when I caught this show in the middle of season two I was hooked.

James Spader is terrific. I had never seen his acting before. His speech to Lizzy at the end of this show was incredible in both its content and emotional effect. I must call out Eggold for his great acting in this series.

But, of course, the kudos go to the writers. The plots are sometimes ludicrous but they get us to buy into them. I am looking forward to the new season. I have them on my DVR. But I am finishing my review of last season.

Turnaround
Hitchcoc12 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
After a weak episode, this more than makes up for it. It shows that sometimes there is just no justice. Tom kills the poor cop, and his family gets no satisfaction from the court because he is of lesser importance in the hierarchy. Liz feels responsible, and filled with guilt, but she can do nothing about it. Tom just disappears, even though he is a killer, and the men in charge have no qualms about kicking the guy to the curb. There is a really moving final conversation as Red talks Liz down. She takes her own money and pays for the college education of the man's daughter because she feels she has deprived her of a future. Red tell her how dangerous this is for her from a human perspective.

Slow start, but gets oh so much better
aantypasa4 April 2024
To begin with the things that irked me somewhat. I hate to be that guy, but the German accents were painfully bad. That being said, I realize the vast majority of people will not speak German or know what it sounds like, so no matter.

On a funny note, it's comical how often filmmakers use Budapest as the default for European cities. In this case, Budapest got appropriated to depict Dresden.

On to the episode though, the interactions in this episode, the dilemma both the Keens find themselves in, the judge, it was all a masterful performance on all accounts. One of the better episodes of the series so far for sure. For what this show is, if they could have modeled the entire series off of the intrigue in this episode, the show would have been so much better off for it.

Not sure what show everyone else was watching
punksamurai198522 June 2021
But like I he last episode this one is garbage based on extremely poor writing and a conceit that The Government would not shut this so called Judge down immediately in the last episode. More garbage and horrible write by with idiotic characters. Seriously the team has still yet to have a success extraction in a single episode. Braxton jumped the shark and now the bottom feeders are finishing the remains. Absolute garbage, as if Alias was written by a 18 year old man from another country who doesn't not know how America's government organizations work and are also a laughing stock.
