Modern Family's hot streak continues in an episode that's more touching than funny

Modern Family's sixth season has been the best in quite a few years, and 'Grill, Interrupted' keeps this trend going. It may not be the funniest episode of the show, but it more than makes up for this with a handful of original stories, some thoughtful writing, and a healthy dose of character work in the final act.

Haley and Andy's subplot has been an ongoing thing for a while now, and whilst tonight's episode builds on the events of 'Closet? You'll Love It!' rather nicely, it's about time we reached a conclusion here. That being said, Sarah Hyland continues to be an absolute delight on screen, seamlessly balancing her comedic side with her emotional moments.

The adult stories fared equally well, with Phil's grill mishaps proving to be the episode's comedic highlights. Season six has been lacking slightly in bringing the whole family together, so having an entire episode here at Jay's house was refreshing. Jay and Alex's dialogue in the car at the episode's close was wonderfully meaningful, adding some much needed depth to Alex, who at this point is probably the show's most forgettable character. Ed O'Neill sells these lines completely.

'Grill, Interrupted' is far from Modern Family at its funniest, but it's just as entertaining, well performed and touchingly written as ever. This show is just unstoppable.
