Grandpa still has it
bkoganbing15 December 2016
Len Cariou who usually around to offer sage advice and counsel to his son, grandchildren, and great grandchildren takes center stage in this Blue Bloods story.

Turns out that great grandpa has been keeping company Tovah Feldshuh best remembered as defense attorney Danielle Melnyk on Law And Order. But Feldshuh is about as far from Danielle Melnyk as you can get in this role. In fact Bridget Moynahan smells something wrong here.

Not to worry Bridget, because Cariou maybe old but he hasn't lost a step in his police instincts. The last scene between Cariou and Feldshuh is priceless. Right out of The Maltese Falcon.

Solid 5 for me. Warning: Spoilers
As always, the acting for all performers was superb. I loved the chance for Janko to shine, and get the draw on her captor.

The storyline with gramps and the gold-digger, to me, was predictable and formulaic. Completely unnecessary in an episode that already had two engaging plots.

The most disturbing part of the episode, which was probably intentional, was watching the Sarah confront her family's murderer. The director made it very clear that the prisoner was sincere in his regret, but Sarah, who was supposed to be a sympathetic character, couldn't find it in herself to give him any grace at all, and in fact doubled down on her suggestion that he kill himself. And then happily go about getting hitched the next day. And this all with Frank's approval. One thing we've come to expect from Frank is that he never wastes an opportunity to dole out some wise, fatherly advice, asking just the right questions to lead his charges to make the right decisions, when if they're difficult. All I saw in this plot line was Frank enabling a fragile young woman to indulge her feelings of hate and vengeance.

Perhaps if they left out the gold digger plotline, they would have had more screen time to allow for more character development for Sarah.

In My Opinion, a Misguided Segment To the Episode

Warning: Spoilers
A few weeks ago I started watching Blue Blood episodes in reruns having never seen the show before. I have to say, it is one of my favorite series in recent times. It reminds me a little of the original Law and Order series. I could easily write some very positive reviews on the 8 or 10 episodes I have watched but instead I'm going to write a negative review on this episode. My negativity has to do with only a third of the episode, the third involving the police commissioner Frank Reagan and a young woman who he accompanies to visit a penitentiary inmate, an inmate who murderer her family when she was a child.

During the meeting the inmate, now an old man, states that he had a mental disorder that severely clouded his judgement and after being on medication following his arrest, was then able to see the horrors of his actions. He even tried to commit suicide due t the guilt he felt. The young woman would have none of it and emotionally told the man that the next time he tried to commit suicide, she hopes he succeeds. Meanwhile, the police commissioner sat in the corner and seemed fine with the goings-on.

To me, those few moments came off as cruel and ignorant of the effects of mental disorders and how it can rule the behavior of those afflicted. Generally the show's police commissioner, played by Tom Selleck, is portrayed in a more compassionate and enlightened manner. Anyway, there have been several episodes I would quickly give a 9 rating. This one gets a 5 for the reasons I have described.
