Spoilers

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

The main plot and the character of Marguerite Dumont are inspired by the real-life Florence Foster Jenkins, a woman often described as a "socialite" who tried desperately (and unsuccessfully) to become an opera singer, despite having a terrible singing voice. Her husband and others often arranged "private audiences" during which and Jenkins could sing to feigned admiration & applause, in order to protect her from ridicule. This same story was also made into an American adaptation starring Meryl Streep in 2016 (approx a year after this film was made).
