Very well written and picturized Pilot episode. They action sequences have been spot on and the actors nailed their respective roles.

A good start to a visually ecstatic Turkish Heritage

Warning: Spoilers
Meet Ertugrul Ghazi who's the son of Suleyman Shah the leader of the Seljucks. Winter is near and provisions are on low for the Kayi Tribe. Ertugrul is gifted a new sword by the smith and prepares for a hunt with his companions. His brother Gundogdu meanwhile is preparing to suggest to Suleyman Shah a place for migration for the winter to the tribe's gathering tomorrow.

In a not so far land we see the Templars guarding a castle which is infiltrated by one of their own. Titus, their leader who kills a guard and warns the rest of the punishment they'll receive if they fail their guard against their enemies. Titus receives some dignitaries, a man and a woman, the woman rests while the man discusses their ambitions. To get the European princes and young men rallied for another Crusade.

Meanwhile we see some Templars carrying prisoners in a cage back to a castle. A man, his Daughter and a younger son. It is heavily hinted that they're some kind of royalty. They're in despair and the father expects them to be executed when they reach their destination, yet comforts his son saying that they'll be free for eternity. The party stops and camps for rest when one templar guard tries to force and kiss the daughter through the cage. The father then grabs him and uses his own knife to kill him. The young woman grabs the key from the guard and opens the cage and all the 3 prisoners try to flee. It's just then a guard spots them running away and the chase ensues.

Meanwhile, we see Ertugrul and his companions ride through the woods looking for a game when they find a deer. Ertugrul gets down and pursues it on foot. When he has got the deer in the perfect spot and is about to shoot his arrow he hears cry for help. It is the same young girl who's father is now shot in the knee with an arrow by the Crusader guards. The guards are about to rape the girl when Ertugrul and his companions arrive as God-sent to save the 3 prisoners. They fight and kill all the Crusaders. Ertugrul's new sword has killed it's first with Crusader blood. The father is injured and needs medical attention. Ertugrul instructs his companions to get Palm leaves and bandage the man before offering help to the young woman who in turn is adamant to continue alone. When Ertugrul is about to leave, she turns around and they continue back the Kayi Tribe's camp.

Meanwhile we see some merchants arrive at Suleyman shah's court and give him a gist of what they've seen and heard around the land near Constantinople and warn of the incoming crusade. Suleyman Shah also worries about the common folk who've beared the brunt of the last crusades. Constantinople is almost in ruins after being ravaged and pillaged by the Crusaders who couldn't find glory further east.

We also see Titus with his guest discussing on how they will incite a new crusade with strong imagery of turning the lands in modern Turkey, Syria and Palestine into Blood red. They do not worry about the Muslims and are confident they'll win expecting Salahuddin Ayyubi's grand children and the Seljucs will fight amongst themselves leaving the path clear for Cursader victory.

We also see a near Savage man of power in his keep choosing amongst slave women for his pleasure. He chooses one with blonde curly hair who is the most expensive one. It's then a man marches in saying the Crusaders we're attacked and lost the prisoners. We understand this is the same castle where the prisoners were supposedly being brought to. The man is infuriated and asks the chosen slave woman to kill the news bearer. She reluctantly but still efficiently kills the man. However the man in charge kills the woman in turn saying one who doesn't fear killing another man can easily kill her own master.

Back in Kayi Tribe, we see Ertugrul arrive with the 3 prisoners. Everyone including Gundogdu wonders who they are, to which Ertugrul replies he'll tell him later. The man is being treated by a healer who is glad they patched the man up with leaves which prevented blood loss which may end up saving his life.

The young woman and Ertugrul talk and he confesses that he's the son of Suleyman Shah. The woman in turn lies saying her father is a Tradesman, a wealthy merchant and so the Crusaders caught and were taking them to prison. We are left to expect much more to come in the next episode. A solid start to a good series with astonishingly good visuals.

Lots of action, lots of plots, absolutely no blood, sex, or gore

I can't believe there are only two reviews for this series. Right at the beginning of my review, I watched this series on Netflix while recovering from kidney failure.

But I never slept through any of the episodes, that's how good this series was for me.

Well acted, well directed, great horsemanship, and sets.

I had no idea of this Turkish history and had to do some research and reading to catch up so I could follow along better.

I have been on the search to purchase a copy of the complete series since 2018-2019 (I think?). I looked tonight, March 2024 and found USB copies of this series. Its still quite expensive, so I will wait until the price comes down.

I will assuredly purchase the series. Well worth it viewing. Its like 5 seasons, and like 500 hours! Worth the binge time.
