Trivia

Director Mira Nair decided to adapt "Queen of Katwe" into a film after making a documentary about the life of the man who trained Phiona Mutesi, Robert Katende.
Ugandan fashion mogul, Sylvia Owori, bought her way into the film as an extra at an auction that acted as a fundraiser for Maisha Film Labs. Other prizes included a "12 Years a Slave" DVD signed by Lupita Nyong'o.
The film is rumoured to introduce a lot of fresh talent with regards to young actors required for the film. A mixture of South African and Ugandan youth are to be cast in various roles.
"Queen of Katwe" will be filmed in both Uganda and South Africa.

In the movie the area around Katwe slum is very realistic (I was in Uganda for 2 years) but there are 2 anomalies: a train appears on the railway track and that line has been closed to all trains for many years; the market they sell their wares at is on the shore of Lake Victoria too many miles for them to have walked. However most people would never know these two facts and it certainly didn't spoil the film which was excellent.
