This is one of the best short films to emerge from the nascent film industry in Ireland and introduces a new female star in Nicola Cowan. The overall production is beautifully judged, artfully paced, and astutely scripted. The talented cast elevate a simple storyline to a higher level of meaning and understanding with a seductive blend of humour and moral poise. Nicola Cowan as Maeve is a revelation as the central heroine who employs enterprising methods of communicating with her childhood schoolfriend Billy on the other side of a twenty foot high peace wall. When Billy's father decides to intervene, an entertaining sequence of events unfolds with a heart warming outcome. There is a gem of a set piece when Maeve, standing on top of the barbed wire peace wall and draped in a conjoined union jack and tricolour wrap, engages Billy's father in a discussion. There is much, much more to be appreciated in this 22 minute film. Watch it and enjoy; this is short film making at its best.
