Cute, funny, emotional, inspiring.
danni-mo-883 January 2015
You have to give this film and the cast/production a lot of credit for what was created here in this movie. I am naturally not a fan of romantic comedies, but this film was actually funny and wholesome. Hollywood spits out films under the genre of 'romantic comedy' and more often than not, the comedy includes old, overused euphemisms for sex that are not very comedic at all - just immature and lame. Just sex, sex, sex, and maybe a little teen-angst. I was pleased with this film because not only does it delve into romance, it portrays the importance of friendship. That is the most important aspect of this film that Hollywood misses out on when making films. Instead of an already famous/rich cast looking to make more bank, you have people from the surrounding area working together creating culture, being a part of a project that did not promise a grade or money or climb. What you have here is group of people living in the small towns and surrounding little cities of Western New York making something special, meeting new people, and opening doors. I was impressed with the outcome considering all of the circumstances surrounding this film, and recommend it for anyone looking to sit around with the family and watch something made by people like them.

A strong fledgling film
jreboy31 December 2014
FDLFD follows Della and her friends as they work their way through small-town romantic entanglements, all of which seem to fly past Della. Created and Directed by Rhonda Parker as a student film it is impossible to say there are no weak spots in the script or the acting, but the overall tone of the film, the fairly unique approach of a making a romantic comedy with no real action sequences lends a warmer feel to the production.

Shortcomings can be forgiven easily because the main characters are engaging and the relationships, and the pangs from the relationships, are believable. This does not have the feel of a vanity project. Every once in a while genuine laughs slip in and liven the film up. Comedy is a difficult thing to master, subtle comedy more-so.

Extremely small-level indie projects like this that rely on character and require time to play out are a rarity, and should be encouraged.

I am impressed with this film and, for the sake of transparency, I am proud to have been one of the fund-raising contributors, albeit on a small scale. I want to see what Rhonda comes up with next.

Very Enjoyable Film!
amccarthy2830 December 2014
It was very enjoyable! The characters all had their own persona, the background music was amazing as well as the story and quality. The sound quality could have been better but overall it was very enjoyable. Hard to take your own attention away from it. It was funny, a nice twist in it. I enjoyed the multiple landmarks from our town and neighboring towns. The local actors were very passionate about their roles. The feeling was good all around. The lighting itself was wonderful. Being able to connect with the main character... It was definitely something to brag about. I called up and messaged some of my friends seeing their own persona's and situations being acted out. Hey it's true! Friends don't date friends!

A funny romantic comedy
franpecorella29 December 2014
This is a very funny Rom Com. It is filmed entirely in Orleans County New York. It showcases the beautiful Lake Ontario, and many of the local treasures, the Famous NYS Erie Barge Canal, many waterfalls, a lighthouse, local parks, and very beautiful Churches with beautiful stained glass windows and Medina Sandstone construction . The cast meshes well. It could be called a chick flick? Rest assured that you can watch it with friends and family members of all ages and not be embarrassed by any of the scenes. Thereis no nudity or vulgar language. It is a movie you will want to watch more than once. Buy a copy, pop a big bowl of popcorn, pour an ice cold soda, sit back and enjoy.

must see romantic com

Grab a glass of wine, sit by the fire and enjoy this romantic comedy of love, romance, tears, and laughter among friends. I absolutely loved this movie not only for the cinematography but for the quality and the tastefulness in which the story-line was put together. In this movie, objectively, everyday things happen example, I noticed the girls didn't let a guy come between their friendship which is very important, because in today's society lot of that is going on and close friendships end!!"never let a guy ruin a friendship" I really liked the sound track as well, very original!! Where can I a get a copy? The areas in which the film was taped is great Orleans county which is a wonderful place to visit and take perfect pictures for proms, weddings etc.I hope this becomes a great hit. This movie is great for all ages.

terrible
glitterjens232 January 2015
I was dragged to a screening of this after already being disappointed by the trailer. As the movie dragged on, I was really hoping I would find something I liked, even if it was the humor of just how bad it was.

Unfortunately, it never happened. The acting was extremely overdone with forced dialogue trying to mimic that of Hugh's films. There were so many lines that you could just tell were right out of a script. There were various points in the movie that were blatant rip-offs from other movies (but executed poorly ie: Silent Ben). I couldn't relate to any of the characters at all. The actor's delivery on many times fell short and flat with unrealistic scenarios.

A major distraction of this film was the terrible audio. In between the difficulty of getting past the shotty performances and ghastly dialogue, the audio was extremely irritating. There's nothing more annoying than poorly executed audio and sound. It really takes away the quality of film.

The only positive attributes I condone for this film would be the selection of music, though, repetition of the same song does not highlight an otherwise 'train wreck' of a movie.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone. This is one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

Amazing Movie
nickgoodboy29 December 2014
This was by far the best independent film I have seen in years. The acting was great.

It brought be back to a time when I grew up just hanging out with friends.

The relationships between the main characters reminded me of when I was in high school chasing girls and not succeeding.

This is a great date movie.

Something to cuddle up on your couch with your significant other with a bowl of popcorn and watch.

Overall I would say that this movie is full of laughs and is a good time. It will leave you feeling happy and with a smile on your face.

Fans Don't Let Fans Make Films
batemancharlie452 January 2015
I attended a screening of Friends Don't Let Friends Date Friends with low expectations and I walked away liking it even less than I expected to. The script was obviously influenced by the films of John Hughes and Kevin Smith, however there is nothing flattering about this imitation. The script tries much too hard to emulate the aforementioned filmmakers and a great deal of the performances come off as forced because of it. The only positive was that although somewhat repetitive, the music fit well with the story this movie was attempting to tell. Don't waste your time with this one, you're better off watching one of the movies that this film wishes it was again than wasting your time with this hollow imitation.

I recommend FDLFDF very highly
valeriewenner25 December 2014
The story will exceed the expectations of every person ever in love. The emotions of joy to sadness, love to hatred, friendship to a broken heart are clearly depicted within each scene. The director visually captured the emotions felt by several different characters in each scene, giving the ability to honestly sense the storyline. The ability to feel the emotions of the characters is captured through various sights, sounds, and places, just as they would play out in real life. It is very well written, and the directing captures every angle imaginable. I admire the extra steps taken to promote the locality of it's filming area. The larger than life steps taken by all involved, to ensure this film is a success, are commendable. The actors and actresses clearly understand the characters they are playing and their emotions are portrayed as if they've lived it before. I am impressed with how well the film was supported and received by the locals where most of the film was shot. I cannot recommend this movie enough!

Dark and edgy
shadowpixie200730 December 2014
FDLFDF is an absolutely unforgettable film! All of the characters are beautiful and talented. I loved Gwen, she was gorgeous and silly. Della was sassy and full of spunk. This film not only tells a timeless love story, but it demonstrates how a small community can come together and make something amazing. The hard work that went into this independent film is very evident. It is dark and edgy, giddy and raunchy, all around wholesome entertainment. Get ready to go on an emotional roller-coaster. This film will make you laugh, cry,and might even creep you out every now and then. Sit back and relax, you wont be disappointed.

A nice story with likable, down-to-earth characters
Jayce7 January 2015
There are a lot of movies out there. If the Internet is any guide, I guess that each year there's about 700 that make it to mainstream theaters, and around 50,000 getting submitted to film festivals. If I were to see all 50,700 movies and rank them all, I bet this movie is around number 1,000. It's not great, but it's not awful; it's got a good heart, good-enough acting, good-enough technical aspects, and a good-enough story.

Starting with the basics, it is competently constructed (shooting it well into the top 10,000 films this year). It was clearly shot on low-budget equipment judging by the picture and sound quality, but it was done professionally. The camera work is well framed, pretty stable, and well lit. The audio was handled with supplemental recording so it doesn't sound like an in-camera mic.

Then there's the acting, direction, and editing which is also reasonably good (now into the 3,000s or so). The film has a meandering but deliberate pace that could be tuned up a bit, but it works. The movie is watchable and you can get lost in the world that's created.

And finally the story and overall experience is, you know, worth a gander. It's not going to be played all over the world to blockbuster lines of people, but if you're hanging out on a rainy day, it's a movie worthy of a couple hours.

One thing I liked was that the actors were more "average sized" so-to-speak. By Hollywood standards, most of them would be the "fat friend", but Hollywood standards are, well, kind of weird, you know? What's quite wonderful is that the film pays absolutely no attention to this fact. These are just normal people getting into and out of relationships.

I thought the story was pretty engaging—I didn't know who was going to end up dating whom—but I thought it got a bit daunting keeping track of the incidental dates and additional characters, trying to remember who was a main character and who was on the side.

In the end, though, it's a nice enough movie. I'm not going to say that this was awesome and you "have to see it". It's a nice story with likable characters who are a lot more down-to-earth than what we're used to seeing on the big screen.

It leave a smile on your face.
larrysaunders-4578530 December 2015
The movie is an entertaining innocent look at life through a young woman's eyes. She has a state of mind lead by her dreams. It is a pleasant cleaver plot. She patiently calculates, and waits to get what she really wants. You get to share her emotions as she goes through issues with her friends, and family. Yet you don't have to worry about sharing the movie with younger children.

It's like parking next to a field to count how many wild flowers are growing there. A look at things everyone else might just passes by, and misses out on. It is set in a small town. So if you want to relax, and laugh it is a good choice.

A feel good classic!
djbutton2830 December 2014
The cast, well directed and acted. A terrific soundtrack and visually appealing makes this movie an instant classic. You will feel like you have stepped back 25 years in time to a place where it's predecessors like John Hughes, Cameron Crowe and Gary Marshall took a bunch talented unknowns and turned them in to on screen legends!

Every person from the main character to every extra has an important and vital roll to the set up of each scene. Nothing was taken for chance in this film. There is something new to see each time you watch it!

The music was placed carefully to coincide with the story. In fact so well that when you hear the songs without the visual you will instantly place it back to the screen! These are the things that classics are made of!

A Refreshingly Unique and Charming Film
deathnoteaddict126 January 2015
I love to see good quality independent films, and this is by far one of the most impressive and enjoyable. I knew this one looked good by the cover and poster, but I was pleasantly surprised at how good it turned out to be. There is the perfect balance of drama and light-hearted comedy. Not to mention, the soundtrack is catchy, fitting, and truly adds a lot. Hard to believe it's an unsigned, local band!

Unlike the majority of romantic comedies I've experienced, the characters in FDLFDF seem real and relate-able. The actors do a great job portraying them, especially Amelia as the lead. ('Della')

It is clear that inspiration for this film was taken from some of the greats. However, it is far from a 'copy.' It takes a spin on the classics and really comes through as it's own work of art.

Aside from the riveting story line, the directing and editing seem really professional. The shots are great, the audio is clear, and the scenes flow into one another.

All in all, I would recommend this to anyone, whether you typically enjoy romantic comedies or not. This is truly worth watching. FDLFDF has something in it for everyone.

Quirky romantic comedy with a great soundtrack
superstarkaren1 January 2015
I enjoyed this film the first time I saw it and loved it the second time around. I found that there are comical moments streamed throughout the film, some blatantly funny and other straight lines dripping with sarcasm. There's silly drama in the foreground of the story and real-life drama underlying, making the film completely relatable. The most charming part of this movie is knowing that these same characters could easily be your own group of friends. Many times I find that the soundtrack to movies overpower the dialogue, drowning out what may or may not be good acting. Not in this film, the music compliments the action of the film. At times it it is an equal partner in setting the mood, as much as any of the acting. Overall, I highly recommend seeing this film. It is well worth your time.

funny, well thought out and overall rewatchable
z_e_r_o966 January 2015
Glitterjens or what ever must have a lower then average iq, this film was spot on as a romantic comedy. I laughed at many points throughout the entire film and couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome. Acting was wonderful, cast was beautiful and I for one have watched it a total of 7 times. Much like the video game halo:combat evolved, this film has major replayability value. As an unbias review, i do have a few miffs about this film. But all in all its easily a ten star movie and i am pleased with my money going towards the purchase. For a college student, mrs.parker did a phenomenal job as this movie trumps hollywoods over budget romcoms. Scale down the budget of a Hollywood film and i guarantee it would be nothing compared to this film. Keep me laughin' and ill be your friend, goes well here. Excuse the poor grammar and spelling, this was all typed on a galaxy keyboard which if you know, is rather small.

Two Thumbs Up for a Female Director
mgoulden5176 January 2015
Words can not express my feelings about this movie! I was not only amazed with the concept, but also the content. The actors were not professionals, however they could be. The inclusion of the scenery around Albion and Medina made it more interesting, since I am from there. The writer/director did a wonderful job and I think that we need more female visionaries making films. Too many stories are told from a male perspective and they miss the raw emotion that this film has. There are several twists and turns that make for unexpected, out of the ordinary romantic comedy. The old lady with lavender hair in the church had me cracking up! I give the movie a thumbs up and a ten-plus star rating!

What a fun story!
saser-295-70796831 December 2015
This film offers a look at a group of friends and the dynamics of their relationships with all sorts of "characters!" I was surprised at many of the turns the story took. I felt like I was part of the inner circle of friends and found myself talking to the screen and giving advice! The characters are strong and well thought out. The story is funny and takes you on a fun ride! Even the locations were well thought out and made great use of local Western, NY businesses and people! Even an original soundtrack by a local band! EXCELLENT! The writer, actors and crew created a great film! A fun film to watch with your friends! Grab some snacks (and maybe some wine) and Enjoy!!

Excellent Movie!
sparnel431 December 2015
I Just want to say That Rhonda Parker hit a home run in this film she made. I see a bright future for her and her husband Mark in the future of Film. This movie did not drag out at all. It was funny and dramatic. I enjoyed it when it came out in the theater and also bought the DVD. If you haven't seen this movie I highly suggest it. Everyone who played their parts in this movie did great acting, loved the use of our Upstate NY Scenery involved. The plot was written perfectly, and I know it must have taken a lot of effort and time and all to make such a real good movie.I truly can't wait to see more movies from Rhonda and her crew, and look forward to the future to see more of her films.

Brings me back
lmmesi2 January 2016
Friends Don't Let Friends Date Friends (2014) brings me back to a place in my mind that I haven't been since I was the age of the characters in this movie. How fun and simple life must have been compared to what it can be now. And how as adults we can either forget that stage or long for that stage. When was the last time you tied sneakers together and tossed them up to a tree? With all the hustle of everyday life, this is a movie to settle down and simply take in. Perhaps even recall what it was like to be single and watching your friends date. This movie about friendships and relationships was enjoyable and easy to watch. A great cast, pretty scenery and backdrops with really good songs.

What a fun movie!
hsilverman-501871 January 2023
I got a chance to watch this movie with the writer/director. Rhonda Parker told me some of the elements of her life were used as inspiration for the film. It's a fun, silly romp through the tough times of the characters in their 20s figuring out about themselves and the friendships they treasure. Highly recommended and thoroughly enjoyed!!

Nice job, Rhonda! Thanks for sharing your gifts to the world. I can't wait to see your next film.

It's been so wonderful getting to know you. Your talents and skills are a true gift. Please continue to share your sweetness and kindness.... But most of all, your sense of humor!

Delightful first feature from writer/director Rhonda Parker
cattlewriter31 May 2020
FRIENDS DON'T LET FRIENDS DATE FRIENDS is one of my favorite films made by an independent WNY filmmaker FDLFDF is the first feature written and directed by Rhonda Parker, with husband Mark Parker as director of photography and editor. The film is delightful, has strong performances from the three leads (Adam S. Dixson, Erin Stamp, and especially Rhonda's cinematic alter-ego, Amelia Favata) and a solid ensemble cast supporting them. But, most importantly, the film is personal, wearing its John Hughes inspirations unabashedly on its sleeve, but not in a derivative way. Rhonda tells her story in her own fashion, citing Hughes' past films as part homage and part affectionate template to carve out her own storytelling path. Okay, some of the jokes are corny, and a scene or two perhaps could have been shot more effectively (a sign of the low-budget strain on a tiny crew wearing multiple hats simultaneously). But Rhonda's empathy for the characters is genuine, and the ending is affectingly told, managing to be both sentimental, yet not saccharine, and cautiously optimistic.
