NINE WEEKS AGO
We see Robin and Marian arrive in New York City. Regina has given them the keys to Mr. Gold's son's apartment. A person steals Marian's purse and Robin promptly chases him down through the streets using a borrowed horse.
This leads into a flashback to Sherwood Forest, "Many Years Ago." Robin is a tavern owner who is having trouble making his tax payments. He has recently married Marian and has retired from thieving. The Sheriff of Nottingham drops by and gives Robin two days to pay what he owes or he'll shut the place down and stick Robin in prison.
Mr. Gold drops by his son's apartment unannounced and demands Robin and Marian clear out. During the argument Mr. Gold drops to the floor, having suffered a heart attack.
In the Sherwood Forest flashback, Rumplestiltskin swings by the tavern and asks Robin to go to Oz and steal the Elixir of the Wounded Heart. In exchange he'll give him enough money to save his tavern.
In the hospital Mr. Gold tells Robin that, while there is no magic in that world, magic brought from other worlds can still be used. He tells Robin the only way to save his heart is via that same Wounded Heart elixir, and that there is some of it in New York. Mr. Gold knows that Robin's code won't allow him to let a person die.
In the flashback we see Robin arrive in Oz. In comes across a fellow thief. The thief warns him that his mission will be dangerous, and asks if he can have some of the elixir.
In New York, the elixir is being held at Oz's furniture store, the Wizard of Oak. Robin is able to break in and grab the elixir, just narrowly avoiding the NYPD. Back at the apartment Marian isn't thrilled that Robin is helping Rumplestiltskin, and wonders if the greater good wouldn't be served by letting him die. He's surprised by how she's acting.
Back in Oz, Zelena catches Robin. She knows Rumplestiltskin must have sent him. Robin is able to escape using a very well placed arrow. Back on the yellow brick road, Robin initially lies to the thief and tells him he failed.
Back in the hospital Robin brings Mr. Gold the potion. The agreement is that he will leave Robin alone and give him the apartment. Mr. Gold agrees, but after Robin leaves he realizes the potion doesn't work. Marian then walks into the room and reveals that she switched the vials when Robin wouldn't listen to her. She then changes form and we see that Zelena is alive and has taken Marian's form. She killed Marian and is now in the midst of a plan to ruin Regina's happiness. After Mr. Gold flat lines and has to be brought back to life by the doctors, Zelena gives Mr. Gold the real elixir in exchange for him leaving her alone and getting the author to write in the happy ending she wants.
When Robin hears the thief's story of losing his sister and wanting the elixir to mend his own heart, he secretly leaves him the vial before departing Oz.
Robin meets Mr. Gold on the streets outside the hospital. Robin tells Mr. Gold he's now not sure if Marian is his happy ending. Mr. Gold tells him hold on to her at all costs.
Back in Sherwood Forest, Robin has his merry men rob the Sheriff of Nottingham and give his gold to the peasants. Marian says this means he'll now have to be on the run, but Robin seems okay with it.
In New York Robin returns to his apartment and tells Marian he wants to be with her. They kiss, and we see Zelena's form in the mirror.
We then fast-forward nine weeks to the opening. Zelena answers Regina's call to Robin's phone. She gleefully tells Regina her plan to steal Robin. Regina hangs up and Mr. Gold tells her that if she doesn't do his bidding he'll have Zelena kill Robin.
