Not Even Amateur When At Its Best. James Bond and Co have no competition. Even Police Academy cops are more competent
thecriticopinion30 May 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Synopsis: Ex-spies brought out of retirement to stop an international incident. Two kids are kidnapped and the team must get them back.

After seeing the trailer for this film I was little curious, but after seeing the poster I wasn't that hopeful. The poster looks like it was designed by someone that does Workman's club posters, very bad. Boy was I right. I've a good mind to ask for a refund.

From the get-go the bad acting, continuity, directing, writing, editing, bad composition of shots, etc. shows. The only good thing really was the dreary Bondesque theme song which was sung beautifully by a very talented singer. Doubt this will help her career though. After the opening credits it goes down hill, and gets worse from there. Although there was a noticeable continuity error of someone sitting at a table on one side then the other when it cuts back at the start.

Where to start with the bad acting. There is none to little chemistry between the characters. It mainly starts to show with the scene where the female lead enters to find the nanny dead. Her reaction is not believable especially with the bad CGI blood effects. One of the most noticeable scenes with bad acting is when after 20 years the two lead characters meet up again after the female lead faked her death. The reaction is so wooden I've seen less wood in a fully stocked timber yard. It could have been done on purpose to distract the audience of the microphone popping into shot in the mirror, but doubt it. That is not the worst bit with cast, and crew popping up on screen. There are several times when you see camera crew in reflections of the likes of mirrors, and sunglasses. The worst bit is when 3 CIA agents turn up looking like men in black, and unbelievable. They are approached by two elderly ladies, and you can see the reflection of the camera crew in one of the agents sunglasses.

The worst bit of acting must come from the so-called CIA agents who are passed their sell-by date. The American accents are terrible especially from the youngest agent in the cafe scene saying "Will someone tell me what is going on." He has to be the worst actor I've ever seen. Absolutely terrible! Not even Tom Watt (from Eastenders fame) can save it. Although he has a decent performance, and shows everyone else up his character does not come across as the head of the British Secret Service. Wardrobe malfunction, or what. He should have had at least a suit and tie on. As for the fight scene at the end give me a break. People throwing punches, and missing, but their targets fall down. Is this some sort of empty force technique. Absolute joke. Another funny bit is in the office with the drawer that has an A4 sheet stuck to it with top secret on it, really! The continuity is terrible. Samples of this are when Mr Gaddesses character is one minute dressed in a suit, casual, back in a suit again within a short space of time... The worst one has to be when a couple of the kidnappers go out for a drink, and get arrested for drunk, and disorderly. They go in wearing one set of clothes, then leave the next day with a different set. Speaking of the kidnappers, totally unbelievable. They look like they've just come out of kindergarten school or diapers. The kids that were kidnapped could easily kick their butts.

The story is disjointed and badly written. It doesn't even explain why the lead female, Mr Gaddesses characters love interest faked her death among most things. The end was so abrupt it seemed rushed. The whole thing seemed like a spoof but there isn't enough comedy for that, and not enough of the serious stuff to be realistic. Total farce.

A couple of scenes and characters were pointless especially the scene with the female lead driving around in her car. No point to it. The scene in the toilet with Mr Gaddess and Tom Watt is totally unbelievable.

I've heard that Mr Gaddess is planning on a sequel and a trilogy. Please spare us unless you get someone, i.e. a director, in that knows what they are doing. Anyone with any sense would not fund it after this and if Mr Gaddess funded it, he would be wiser spending his money on going to film school, or a course of some sort. He is terrible actor, and I remember seeing him in Dead Frequence, which has similar acting in it.

The editing and the composition of shots are bad. There is no color grading, and it comes across as a home video style most of the time. The sound is the best part except the music, but even that has some minor errors.

Anyone that praises this must be either cast, crew, family or friends, because no one that has any sense would praise this. Don't believe the positive reviews on this. Why anyone would watch this again after the first time is beyond me. I've had more fun watching rain trickle down windows. It is really that bad. What a waste of 80 minutes. In the end, it all appears to be a group of friends that have got together, and made this film for a laugh. This might be Mr Gaddesses first film of his own, but I think the phrase biten off more than he can chew comes to mind.

This is definitely up there with the likes of Birdemic and The Room. The inexperience of the director, actors, etc. show up badly. Avoid at all costs. Utter rubbish!

Why didn't they call it The Crapacting Club
thegman-899322 June 2017
I got to see this in Spain at the premiere last year, and couldn't last the full length of the film it was that painful. I think it was about half way though, and I left it because the acting was that bad. I wasn't the only one, and it looked like the cinema was half full by the end. Gaddess bragged this up like a Hollywood blockbuster, but is far from it. He was telling people he wrote it yet there is another writer credited. Does that person exist, and why weren't they at the premiere.

Appalling acting writing and directing what I saw of it. Don't waste your time with this one.

Don't Believe The Hype - Another Hollywood Wannabe Production
stuntmann2 June 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I don't know about other people, but Im getting tired of wannabes think they can pick up a camera, and shoot, then edit, and think they have a Hollywood master piece. Thats what these guys have done. I feel sorry for the actors in this. The only good thing about this is the music. The theme song in the opening credits it great, but that's it. The acting is really bad. I cant believe I managed to sit through this. I know there were others that couldn't sit through it, and left the screening.

I don't want to spoil it in case anyone wants to watch it, even though I think they'll be upset after they do, but the end is forced, a case of that's it. The writing is a bit of a shambles, but Billie was trying to take credit for it when I heard someone else did it, and he changed some of it, which is why his name is on as a screenwriter. Billie should have left it to an experienced writer, because of the plot not flowing, and seems it doesn't connect properly. He wants to make a sequel and dread to think what that will be like.

Billie Gaddess is not good as a lead actor, and it shows. His character tries to be posh, but goes back to his native tongue a lot.

The bad acting could be down to the director as well.

Also, noticed the problems with camera crew appearing in sunglasses, and he needs to get a fight coordinator as a big fight at the end is silly, when you can see them missing each other. Also cast suddenly have a change of clothes when they shouldn't have.

Wish I could give it a zero rating, I can't. At least the 1 star is worth it for the song.

Maybe stick to making music videos Billie.

Superb

I have seen this film twice. The first time was at the premiere and the second time was at the first cinema showing in Torrevieja. All I can say is WOW! This was a low (none existent) budget film but you would never have guessed it. It show cases the area around Torrevieja. If I didn't live there I'd certainly want to visit it. The story kept you on your toes, wondering how it was going to end. I hope there is a follow up as I'd love to know what happens to George and the rest of the CC crew.

The Cucaracha Club is a spy thriller with a difference - think James Bond as a retired drunken expat, and a less than special agent!
spiddock27 January 2017
The Cucaracha club was filmed on a production budget of just €23,000, and none of the production crew other than Director Rai Woods had ever been involved in getting a full length feature film on screen before, so when I saw it ahead of its general release, I didn't really know what to expect. What I got was a fantastic film experience, because the locations are stunning, the cinematography is excellent, the acting is high standard, and the story moves along nicely, taking the audience with it.

Because of the low production budget, there was nothing spare for special effects, gadgets and stunts, but rather than detracting from the film, it's actually a bonus. This is a strong story, with believable characters, so it's not your usual over the top spy story. Rai Woods brings a touch of Hitchcock to the film, framing either left or right, hardly ever central, and the lines are crisp and clear. Since so many modern films feel like you're watching them through a train window, this makes a refreshing change. Rai extends the Hitchcock experience by making a cameo appearance as the submarine captain.

Yes, despite the low budget, The Cucaracha Club has submarines, jet skis, fast cars and even faster women. Sex and violence - the staples of any spy film - are hinted at rather than presented graphically, and there's nothing gratuitous, so nothing to frighten Grandma or embarrass her in front of the teenagers. You don't see deaths on screen, but little touches let you know it's there. Look out for the shaking Cuban-heeled boot in what is one of the real highlights of the film.

The Cucaracha Club is set in and around Torrevieja on Spain's Costa Blanca, where retired special agents George and Smoggie are boozing their lives away. Then the Ambassador's children are kidnapped, and the two drinking buddies are recalled to active service.

In a fast-paced story with a wealth of eccentric yet believable characters, George must confront his past and battle his demons, while trying to return the teenagers to their parents. The first shock comes when he meets the children's mother, and there are many more to come.

You can't help but become involved with these rather less than special agents, and root for them all the way. James Bond it isn't, but the production crew of The Cucaracha Club achieved something that Eon Productions couldn't pull off with all their big names and big budgets - they got permission to film in Torrevieja Marina.

The scenes in the Marina, and in the surrounding countryside, are worth watching the film for, even if you're not into spy thrillers. And there are some great original songs, written by Peter Taylor, who lives near Torrevieja, and performed by talented local artistes.

The Cucaracha Club showcases Torrevieja beautifully, and it's a tribute to the talents of co-writer and star Billie Anthony Gaddess and everyone else involved in bringing the story to the screen. Catch it if you can - you won't be disappointed.
