The Arrival

I don't know where this show is going, having only seen the first episode, but I am pretty philosophical when it comes to books to movies. I read Childhood's End back when I used to read as many as ten science fiction books a week. Arthur C. Clarke was always a cut above most at that time. I love this book, but I also know that seldom do these people follow the plot. For the first episode, it didn't bother me that an articulate farmer became the go-to guy from the overlords. There were great liberties taken, and, yet, it's still quite entertaining. I don't know what the people of earth would do if faced with a group of benevolent aliens who take their competitiveness away from them by giving them everything. I'm quite aware of what is happening with the kids, so I will look to see how faithful their role is to be. If they screw with the ending too much, I might have more to say.

Interesting premise, poor execution

Warning: Spoilers
The film addresses the subject of a benevolent world government. The fact that the rulers are aliens seems unimportant. The achievement of paradise has haunted philosophers for centuries. Unfortunately, the film glosses over these troubling issues. Peace is achieved by removing the wall between Israel and Palestine. Saudi oil is no longer needed, so their pipelines are used to irrigate Africa?

No great thought was given to the most minor issues. The script isn't great, and there aren't too many likable characters. We will see how part two goes. But if the introductory episode fails, how will they be able to tackle the "meat" of the story?
