Storyline

Beeba Boys: a ferocious, adrenaline-charged Indo Canadian gang war, and a violent clash of culture and crime. Gang leader Jeet Johar and his young, loyal, and often-brutal crew dress like peacocks, love attention, and openly compete with an old style Indo crime syndicate to take over the Vancouver drug and arms scene. Blood is spilled, hearts are broken, and family bonds shattered as the Beeba Boys ("Good Boys") do anything "to be seen and to be feared" in a white world.

Ocean of Pearls, Breakaway, Footsteps into Gangland, Dr.Cabbie... we are starting to see films in English with Punjabi characters as leads however none of them have been truly great films. Going in to this film I knew what to expect, you can get a good sense of what kind of movie it is going to be from the trailer. Since there are not many crossover films out there and basically only one other movie on Indo-Canadian gang violence I went and out and saw Beeba Boys.

Beeba Boys takes influence from what happened in B.C. during the 90's where a lot of Indo-Canadians, first generation Sikhs and young immigrants were involved in drugs and gang violence. A lot of lives were lost during this time and families destroyed. Now I get what Deepa Mehta was trying to do, make a crime/drama film like Goodfellas, even the movie is called Beeba Boys which translates to English as Good Boys. The problem is that she is all over the place with this film.

We have Randeep Hooda, Gulshan Grover, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, all these Bollywood actors in this film, fancy suits and hairstyles, which tells you one thing, there is some tacky Bollywood influence in this film. On top of that the movie takes place in present time, so we are supposed to believe this is going on right now. There is heavy influence from deceased gangster Bindy Johal and his crew in this movie to the point where it's almost like why not have just made a biopic on him, his crew, and the rival gangs he fought with.

We are not given any proper backstory on this crew and how they got in to crime. There are rarely any showings of their operation or how it works. We do not see their families except for the main lead. Any executions that are done are done in broad daylight without masks or any sort of cover. If we are to believe this movie takes place in present time, with today's technology, I am sure there would be a video clip of Jeet Johar executing someone on Youtube and he would be in jail for the rest of his life.

As for the acting, I will say Ali Momen as Nep is the only one who stands out. Given the weak script he did a good job with his role. Waris Ahluwalia as Manny the Joker falls flat with most of his comedy in the film, Your Mama jokes? seriously? Another thing that is odd about his character is that he is a Sardar. It is hard to believe that a Sardar with a full beard would drink or smoke let alone be involved in the drug trade. Jeet Johar's mom is a misfire in this film, any real Punjabi mom would be crying and fighting with her son constantly if he was involved in the drug trade. The problem with that is that it would take this movie to a whole other level, it would be taken serious.

If Deepa Mehta wanted to make her version of Goodfellas she should have had it take place in the 90's and taken it a little more serious. If she wanted to have it set in present time she should have made the film a little more grounded and believable. Goodfellas is a fun film, still you see how dirty that world is, you never get a sense of that with this over stylized wannabe.

If you truly care about Indo-Canadian gang violence watch the documentary "A Warrior's Relgion" for more insight on the issue.
