China Box Office: Sammo Hung’s ‘Bodyguard’ Beats Up ‘Batman v Superman’

3 April 2016 8:19 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Two new Chinese movie releases and a still strong “Zootopia” this weekend dashed expectations that “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” would be a breakout hit in China this year.

“Batman v Superman” occupied fourth spot of the Chinese box office on each of Friday, Saturday and Sunday, but ranked third over the three-day period, earning $12.6 million (RMB81.8 million,) narrowly ahead of “Zootopia” which earned $12.5 million (RMB81.4 million.)

That represented a 78% drop from the superheroes’ first weekend. After 10 days “Batman v Superman” stands on a cumulative of $86.2 million (RMB560 million.)

Action drama “My Beloved Bodyguard” (aka “The Bodyguard”) debuted on top and scored $25.2 million (RMB164 million.) Directed by veteran martial arts star Sammo Hung, and starring Hung and Andy Lau, the Hong Kong-Chinese co-produced film claimed top spot on each day.

In second spot on each of the three days was dark comedy “Chongqing Hotpot.” It earned $21.8 million (RMB138 million) over three days. »

‘Batman v Superman’ Hits a Wall at China Box Office

1 April 2016 7:55 PM, PDT | Variety - Film News | See recent Variety - Film News news »

Superhero franchise movie “Batman v Superman: The Dawn of Justice” slumped at the Chinese box office as it entered its second week of release.

On Friday (April 1) the film earned $2.57 million (RMB16.7 million) and slipped from first place to fourth in the Chinese box office rankings. That score represents a drop of 85% compared with the previous Friday (March 25,) when it opened in China with $18.4 million as part of a globally coordinated day-and-date release.

“Batman v Superman” has seen its box office scores reduce on a daily basis through the week following its Saturday (March 26) peak of $22.3 million. With a host of new Chinese-language releases ahead of the local holiday — Tomb Sweeping Festival (Qingming) — that meant that exhibitors slashed the number of screens available to “Batman V Superman.”

The Friday chart was topped by “My Beloved Bodyguard,” (aka “The Bodyguard”,) a martial arts action drama directed by and starring Sammo Hung »

The Bodyguard Trailer And Poster, Starring Sammo Hung, Andy Lau And Crime

7 January 2016 11:00 AM, PST | Screen Anarchy | See recent Screen Anarchy news »

The great Sammo Hung delivers a great-looking first trailer for The Bodyguard, in which he stars as the titular character. Now in retirement, he has settled down in a small town on the border between Russia and China, where he befriends a young girl whose father (Andy Lau) becomes ensnared with local criminals. When the girl and her father disappear, Sammo must come to the rescue. Hung is both director and action director for the film and it looks as good as his classic work, albeit enhanced a bit more with wires. Still, it promises a tasty chunk of action. The Bodyguard is due for release on April 1. Check out the poster, the trailer, and a previous promotional photo in the gallery below. [Via Film Combat Syndicate...
