The first case since Gerry left the team sees UCOS working with Ted Case, who is destined to fill Gerry's place, investigating the murder of a vicar. He was a white man married to a black woman so a racial motive is suspected; especially since he received many racist threats in the run up to his murder. The case has been reopened because the vicar's son claims to have 'recovered memories' about the event; saying he now remembers screams and seeing somebody running from the scene. As the investigation progresses it quickly becomes apparent that the family is fairly dysfunctional to put it mildly; the dead man may have been involved with his curate, his domineering wife can't accept that her daughter is a lesbian and the elder son was involved with the Polish housekeeper. As far as suspects go there is also the person who sent the racist letters and had a crush on the daughter. Away from the case Steve takes an instant dislike to Ted when Ted refers to Danny as 'the smartly dressed one'. Later Ted brings in coffee and doughnuts leading the others to compete in the 'homemade' treats department. Danny also meets girlfriend Fiona's parents; it does not go well.
This was a decent enough episode but something is lacking; not only is Gerry obviously missing but Sasha is also away meaning we only have two established characters and new boy Ted working the case. Larry Lamb does a decent job as Ted, I'm sure his character will grow on me as series progresses. Thankfully the writers haven't decided to make a 'Gerry mkII'. The case investigated in this episode is interesting and there are plenty of likely suspects to keep the audience guessing. The interaction between Ted and the established members of the team, especially Steve, provide some laughs although the funniest scene has to be Danny's dinner with Fiona's parents; her father tries to belittle Danny while raving about how wonderful Fiona's ex was and ends with her mother giving him a black eye with a ladle! Overall a solid enough introduction to new character Ted with an interesting case and some funny moments.
