- After escaping from prison, a notorious serial killer and conman becomes the target of a nationwide manhunt led by an honest police officer determined to catch him.
- Meet him once and your life will change forever. The movie revolves around Charles, an enigmatic con man and a vicious killer, and the lives he touched with his inescapable charm and mysterious personality. We follow Charles, who is literally evil personified, as he manipulates innumerable people to facilitate his jail break. The thin line between his victims and accomplices include a copywriter of an international ad agency clinging on to Charles for hope, a royal princess seeking adventure in an otherwise bland life, a young hippie girl hopelessly drawn towards him, and an innocent law student Mira madly in love with the dreams sold by Charles amongst various others - from a financial wizard, an extortionist from Haryana to a helpless prison supervisor. Bit by bit, the character of Charles is revealed through all those who encountered him. Probably the only person who interacted with Charles the least, Commisioner Amod Kant, was affected by him the most. We see the impact of Charles on all through the eyes of Amod Kant - and their ever raging battle of good and evil, where good eventually wins but evil always resurfaces. This story, set in the 1980s, shows how Charles escapes from India's most securely guarded prison and is then subsequently arrested once again in Goa. It reveals the story behind the seemingly simple cat and mouse game between Amod Kant and Charles. But more importantly, the movie gives the world a peek into the dangerous mind of Charles, how he led different people to perceive him differently, how he filled the vacuum in their lives and ultimately, his dark world where right and wrong blend into a charming and mystique grey existence.
- Charles Sobhraj (Randeep Hooda) is an international thief. He has recently committed 2 murders in Bangkok, targeting foreign backpackers, killing them and then taking all their money. Charles continues to operate unabated, taking bigger and bigger targets for 7 yrs. He is arrested by Delhi police. He is in a Delhi jail 11 yrs later in 1986. On 25th July 1986, Charles escapes prison along with 3 other inmates Richard Thomas (Alexx O'Nell), Bajrangi Babu (Saurabh Sarkar) and Satpal Punia (Sandeep Punia) Amod Kanth (Adil Hussain) is the CBI investigating officer, who arrests Satender Kumar (Jailor) (Vipin Sharma) for criminal negligence in Charles escape. Amod meets Mira Sharma (Richa Chaddha), who is a law student, and used to meet Charles in prison. Mira is rumored to be Charles's girlfriend.
Amod also meets Princess Malvika (Shaanti), who narrates how Charles duped her in 1986, by making her believe that he is from a royal family & needs her help to save his dynasty. Amod also recruits Inspector Sudhakar Zhende (Nandu Madhav) into his team, who had apprehended Charles once and recognizes him by face. Charles, & his 3 associates are in MUmbai where Charles meets Liz (Mandana Karimi) & has sex with her. Apprently Liz, is also Charles's girlfriend.
Soon, Bajrangi is apprehended. But before police can get to Charles, he and Liz escape Mumbai, but not before duping a British couple of $ 10,000. Charles reaches Goa, where he identifies his next target, a backpacking couple. In Goa, Charles hooks up with his 3rd girl friend Andrea (Anastasia Fullfina). Andrea is jealous that Charles is banging the British chick and she gives an anonymous tip to Sudhakar, who arrests Charles from a Goa bar. However, getting to Mumbai is tricky as in addition to SBI, Mumbai, Delhi & Goa police are all looking to arrest Charles and claim credit for solving this high profile case. Finally all concerned jurisdictions start working together and Amod takes charge. All co-accused, including Bajrangi, Satpal, Alex and Mira are interviewed to get a sense of Charles personality. They all give conflicting statements, leading to a suspicion that the man arrested is not Charles at all.
In fact Charles convinces Dr. Ashima Mehra (criminal psychologist) (Lucky Morani), that he is a visiting professor from Harvard, with a degree in world history. As Charles is taken to trial, each witness narrates how they were lured by Charles's charm. His unassuming manner, his ease with any situation that he is in. His absolute control over women, who were lured to him sexually. His ability to corrupt people, while using money, but making it more than just money.
The witnesses detailed how Charles used his money & charms to gather materials right under the Jailers nose, that would eventually help him escape. He arranged regular cooking parties for all guards in the prison to earn their trust & when he was ready, Charles mixed sleeping pills in the food to knock them all out at once, & simply walk out of the prison. Even though Mira's turns police witness, she still professes her love for Charles. This angers Amod & he simply cant understand what is so special about Charles that makes all women go gaga over him (including his own wife). Amod confronts Mira with pics of all the dead girls killed by Charles.
Mira reveals that 18 yrs ago Charles was sentenced to death for murder in Thailand. In Thailand, they close the file if the murderer has not been caught for 20 yrs. Charles had escaped Thailand to come to India. India had no extradition treaty with Thailand. So, he had escaped prison with an aim to be caught again, so that he could an extension in an Indian prison for 3 yrs, after which he would be free to go anywhere in the world. A few yrs ago, he had even sent his lawyer to Thailand to offer them money to drop charges against him, but Thai authorities refused. If Charles is caught by Thailand again, he would simply be shot.
Amod further investigates & finds that Charles took money from a fellow inmate, who was facing bank fraud charges in London. The deal was that Charles would arrange for the key witness in London to be killed. That is the money that Charles used to fund his escape from prison in India. Ultimately Charles used Richard to collect the money & to get the supplies for the escape (as Richard had a 3 month parole note). Richard didn't trust Charles & took pictures of everything, which Amod presents in court. Charles is sentenced for a long time.
