Last I checked, the Cannon Mountain tram doesn't connect two roads. Adam basically took a scenic ride to the top of the mountain and went back down. There also isn't a dirt road that will take you over either. Even if there was, everyone was traveling over the mountain in the wrong direction. The Appalachian trail goes east to west while the tram was shown traveling west to east. It's a shame that this series came so close to Bear Notch Rd and the Kancamagus Highway (arguably the most scenic driving roads in the White Mountains, and a must visit place for all car enthusiasts) without so much as mentioning it or filming the hairpin turn.

Warning: Spoilers
Almost the entire episode (fluff) was filmed in Western North Carolina near Bryson City. The part where they say they got on the train in Pennsylvania... that was the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad in Dillsboro, NC. They even thank them in the credits.
