For Whom the Bell Tolls
lavatch8 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In one of the most tragic moments of the series, Francis Poldark tolls the bell at his Grambler mine and informs the distraught miners of the permanent closing. He then writes "resurgim" on a post, indicating that at some point in the future, the mine will raise again. But those prospects seem slim, based on the profligacy of Francis. The stoic and determined Elizabeth plans to cope by accepting what pittance may remain of from Trenwith manor.

By contrast, Francis's cousin Ross Poldark has the innovative idea of the mines joining in a collective in order to prevent the buyout of the unscrupulous George Warleggan. Dr. Dwight Enys, a close friend of Ross and a specialist in the lung diseases of the miners, lends his support.

Demelza takes it upon herself to contact Captain Blimey in the hope that he might consider a reconciliation with Verity. At first, the stubborn captain claims that he is married to his ship. But after reflection, he contacts Demelza and apologizes for his "unmanly" behavior. His urgent question: "Am I to hope?"

When Verity meets with Captain Blimey, there is a riot of the hungry beggars and unemployed miners, stealing from the scoundrel Matthew Sanson. In another love subplot, Ross's foreman Mark Daniels is smitten by the actress Karen Smith. After the wedding, it is clear that Mark has his hands full.

With everything hanging in the balance of the new mining cooperative, the one major comfort in Ross's love is the undying love he has for Demelza and the recently baptized infant Julia Grace Poldark.
