- West German Special Forces attempt to rescue hostages aboard hijacked Lufthansa Flight 181 at a Somalian airport in October 1977.
- On October 13th 1977, Lufthansa Flight LH181 took off from the island of Mallorca with ninety-one people on board. As it flew over the Mediterranean Sea, four terrorists hijack the plane. A fanatic who calls himself "Captain Martyr Mahmud," led the attack and he demanded the release of political prisoners and fifteen million dollars otherwise he would kill the hostages and destroy the plane. A young stewardess Gabriele Dillmann is forced to relay the demands in a heartfelt plea to the tower. Germany's new Special Forces Unit, GSG9, with their highly trained operatives may have to launch a rescue raid. The operation is exceptionally risky and they enlist the help of Britain's SAS. The hijacked plane flies all over the Middle East for days but when the plane's captain Jurgen Schumann is murdered in South Yemen Germany's politicians order the Special Forces team into action. In Mogadishu, Somalia, the assault squads got into their positions under the plane as the hijackers were told that their demands are being met. The GSG9 commandos stormed the plane, killing three of the hijackers and capturing a fourth. The remaining crew and passengers are saved in a mission that takes just seven minutes. The operation is still studied today and regarded as the textbook attack on how to take down a hijacked plane. This is the story behind the raid that put Germany's GSG9 on the map - Operation Fire Magic.
