Stingingly attuned to the tension between long-term love and last-minute misgivings, Between Us makes a familiar situation feel remarkably fresh.
The loose style of the film is held together by the strong performances from the leads and supporting actors alike.
Though it runs into a couple of bumps along the way, Between Us is a well observed and sensitive indie drama that'll be familiar to anyone struggling with the onset of maturity.
Between Us is most compelling when it's putting Feldman and Thirlby one on one, to talk about or around what ails their characters, in revealing tête-à-têtes or confessional voice-over.
Illingworth aims to capture a vital relationship at a crucial turning point, but Between Us fails because Dianne is half-formed. She's just another projection of male desire and fear, easily led and passive-aggressive, everything but a woman who knows her own mind.
