Sidney, the enlightened vicar takes on society.

Being gay was a crime during the setting for Grantchester, hard to imagine nowadays, but the incredibly human and empathetic Sidney of course sees the injustices. Meanwhile Geordie battles his own demons as his young son fights for his life.

I thought this was an exceptional episode, it was a very interesting story line, real life from the not too distant past, but more then that we got some real tension between Sidney and Geordie. Sidney showed true friendship as he stuck by his angry and upset friend. The pair had some wonderful scenes.

Favourite scene for me had to be the one where Hildagarde discussed her past life with Mrs Maguire, it was a wonderfully human scene. Leonard also, has become such an interesting character.

Episode 1.4

The issues with this episode is a lot of the characters act for their time period.

It might easy to dismiss Geordie as homophobic but he was a policeman at a time when homosexuality was illegal.

The writer tries to skirt around this by having a side plot for Geordie with his infant child being ill.

Sidney thou is enlightened. When Dominic Taylor is killed soon after a house fire where Sidney rescued his wife. Sidney realises that Dominic was bisexual and had a young lover, Ben Blackwood.

Dominic might had also been blackmailed and the fire might had been arson.

It can be uncomfortable to watch as Geordie arrests anyone he comes across who is gay. The mystery itself was ok but it was not too difficult to work out who might be the murderer.
