I didn't like it.
4 October 2017 | by See all my reviews

I love Stephen King. I've read at least a dozen of his books and loved every one except Gerald's Game. I simply couldn't get through it with the same level of engrossed involvement that normally comes with the great stories he rolls out. I put it down half way though and never looked back. I've seen most of the adaptations of his books to film and though they'e not always true to the written word, they are normally still very good.

This one was pretty true to the first half the the book I read, but I still didn't like it. However, I think the Film makers did a great job with this one. They very cleverly dealt with some difficult issues that must have arisen in porting this one from page to screen. Of course having said all that, its still the same story. A woman tied to a bed for the majority of it and regardless of how many flashbacks, hallucinations or epiphanies she has, that's still the story. Aside from some interesting exchanges with a dog, I found it a boring and mundane tale.

It is indeed rare that I encounter a production with such excellent qualities (and here they really are first rate) and still dislike the film. I won't go into particulars other than to say all aspects of the production were rock solid. Carla Gugino is excellent and Bruce greenwood, (seriously can you believe the body on that man! It's like they've photoshoped his head on Ryan Gosling's body) is also great.

I really should have stayed far from this one, and can't recommend it because the underlying story just runs too thin. However as I've said I can appreciate it is still an great production. I suggest you go see it but I hope at least this lets you know what you're in for.
