When Morse jokingly describes Bixby's art collection as "the loot of the world", he is quoting a famous line from the "News On The March" sequence in "Citizen Kane".
Like the 1944 film, the plot contains a murder where the victim's face has been destroyed beyond recognition by a close-range shotgun blast, with the result that the dead person is, for some time, believed to be someone quite different.
