Jane tells Frankie, "The law is very clear; the attempted murder of a dead body is not a crime." In fact, the exact opposite is true. This would be a defense of "factual impossibility," and, according to John Hasnas at the George Mason University School of Law, 37 states have specifically prohibited the use of a factual impossibility defense, and federal district courts have either done likewise, or so limited it's use as to make it meaningless, and that "As a result, one's susceptibility to punishment for attempting the impossible is today a rather uncontroversial matter of settled law." The question at hand is what the defendant believed the circumstances to be, rather than what they actually where. Thus, Polly would indeed be guilty of attempted murder, as Frankie stated.
