To date (2016), Paula Hawkins' book that inspired this film is the fastest-selling adult novel in history.
Emily Blunt was at the beginning stage of pregnancy at the start of filming. She kept this a secret from the cast and crew except for her friend, co-star Justin Theroux. Director Tate Taylor only found out of the case towards the end of filming when filming a scene of Rachel showering, he noticed that her bump was bigger then it was before and went to confront her whether if she had withheld information that was privy to him. Blunt eventually had to reveal it to Taylor and he also agreed to keep it secret. By the time filming ended in February 2016, she was in her fifth month of pregnancy.
Original author Paula Hawkins had Michelle Williams in mind for the role of Rachel Watson, which went to Emily Blunt.
The painting that Rachel Watson (Emily Blunt) is looking at in an art gallery is "The Subway" by George Tooker.
Margot Robbie was considered for the role of Megan Hipwell.
Kate Mara was attached to the role of Megan Hipwell but dropped out. Haley Bennett ended up replacing her.
Chris Evans was attached to play Tom Watson, but scheduling conflicts with Marc Webb's Gifted (2017) forced him to drop out. He was soon replaced by Justin Theroux.
Before she was even cast in this film, Haley Bennett had read the book while on location shooting The Magnificent Seven (2016).
The book that this film is based on is actually set in England, and Rachel Watson gets the train into London. Emily Blunt is from London, England. For this film, the location was changed to New York but Rachel speaks with Emily's natural British accent in keeping with author Paula Hawkins' vision.
The novel debuted at No. 1 on The New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2015 list and remained in the top position for fifteen weeks, thirteen of which were consecutive. The book had sold more than 3 million copies in the United States alone as of July 2015.
Jared Leto was considered for the role of Scott Hipwell, but he dropped out due to scheduling conflicts. Luke Evans replaced him.
This is director Tate Taylor's fifth collaboration with actress Allison Janney. They previously worked together on The Help (2011), Get on Up (2014), Pretty Ugly People (2008) and the short film Chicken Party (2003).
There are many similarities to Alfred Hitchcock films such as The Lady Vanishes (1938) [the missing woman], Psycho (1960) [the girl in the shower] and Vertigo (1958) [the girl in the museum looking at the painting].
In the book, Rachel Watson is chubby from being an alcoholic. Emily Blunt was pregnant with her daughter Violet during filming.
Friends (1994) reference: When Lisa Kudrow's character sees Rachel (Emily Blunt) on the train, she excitedly exclaims, "Rachel! I haven't seen you in a million years!" Kudrow's character on the sitcom, Phoebe Buffey, was best friends with Rachel Green (Jennifer Aniston). Coincidentally, Aniston's real-life husband, Justin Theroux, plays Rachel's ex-husband in this film.
This was the first film directed by Tate Taylor not to feature Octavia Spencer.
Principal photography on the film began on November 4, 2015, in New York City.
Emily Blunt and Rebecca Ferguson have both co-starred in blockbusters with Tom Cruise: Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow (2014) and Ferguson in Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation (2015).
Emily Blunt was first contacted by producer Marc Platt about the title role and only then went out to buy a copy of the book. Emily had appeared in Into the Woods (2014) co-produced by Platt.

On September 21, 2015, this was reported that Jared Leto and Chris Evans were in talks to join this film, where Evans would play Tom Watson, Rachel's ex-husband, and Leto would play the neighbor's husband.
On October 27, 2015, Justin Theroux was cast in the film to play Tom Watson, replacing Evans, who left the film due to a scheduling conflict.
Lisa Kudrow was Jennifer Aniston's co-star on the television series Friends (1994). Jennifer Aniston is the wife of Justin Theroux.
Allison Janney and Justin Theroux both appeared in the movie Strangers with Candy (2005).
On November 4, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Luke Evans had replaced Leto, who left the film due to a scheduling issue.
This was the second collaboration between Lisa Kudrow and Allison Janney. Janney was a guest in Kudrow's series Web Therapy (2011).

In this film, Rachel Watson is infertile. Coincidently, Emily Blunt was pregnant during filming. This Coincidence also occurred during filming of Into the Woods (2014) in which Blunt plays a character who can not get pregnant. However, she was in real life.

Darren Goldstein, otherwise known as the Man in the Suit in this film, is a featured actor on Showtime's The Affair. Incidentally, the hit cable show also features a storyline heavily based on interwoven extramarital affairs and murder.
