This was explained in the NCIS two-part episode NOLA was spun out of. When Pride was hired by NCIS, he broke up a drug ring that had been plaguing a NO neighborhood. Taking down the ring went far in cleaning up the neighborhood. The neighborhood was so grateful they made him an honorary life member of their Mardi Gras krewe, which is a rare honor in NOLA. His nickname "King" would have come from being made the honorary head of the krewe in the subsequent Mardi Gras parade. Lasalle said the honor paid to Pride by the neighborhood was one of Pride's most cherished achievements.
