Sammy Devroux is a crack addict who guides us through the life and times of her family which takes place mostly in a two story house located in Detroit Michigan. It is present day. Someone is murdered in the opening of the story but before it is revealed who it is we are taken back in time to 1986. The Devroux family has just moved into their new two-story home with their five children. Through flashbacks and Sammy's voice over we are introduced to her father Henry, her mother Doreen, her four siblings, Miles, Kenny, Job and Gabrielle and her aunt and uncle Lorraine and Howard. Things are happy and joyful until the untimely death of Doreen occurs. Henry turns to alcohol for comfort and the children are now exposed to violent and brutal living conditions disguised as harsh forms of discipline.
