interesting oddity
SnoopyStyle14 December 2018
Ben Layten (Thomas Middleditch) is suicidal after his wife Claire left him. He's taken with the mysterious Hanna Weathers (Jess Weixler). He's trying to examine his life and untangle it to find the source of his trouble with his neighbor Tabby Song's help. His dad fearing death from his heart-attack tells him about a previously unknown adopted sister. He suspects that Hanna is her long lost sister.

Initially, the romance is really problematic but the movie goes so far off-kilter that non of it really matters. It is an interesting oddity. Of course, the reveal comes as no surprise to anyone. It would be better to just add more surrealism. This small indie needs to make its splash in something and outrageous surreal visuals could be that thing. It also need something more specific about Hanna to create a poetic connection. This is interesting but nothing great.

Call me goofy, but I really liked this rom-com.
peterp-450-2987161 March 2018
"You're riding a girl's bike! It's UNISEX!"

Initially I thought I would be presented with yet another rom-com. In retrospect "Entanglement" is a kind of romantic comedy. But in a bizarre way. This felt like an outsider of all romantic comedies. The beginning isn't exactly a comical theme. But strangely enough, it's hilarious when you see Ben's (Thomas Middleditch) clumsy suicide attempts. Someone stealing the prepared car with a running engine so the exhaust fumes would kill Ben, was kind of amusing. And next he starts a quest for the girl who almost became his sister. A newly discovered pregnancy of his mother apparently threw a spanner in the works. When he finally finds Hanna (Jess Weixler), it turns out she isn't only a charming-looking fox. But also in terms of personality, she's completely the opposite of Ben.

Ideal material for a cozy rom-com, isn't it? Indeed. But in the end it's about something completely different. It shows the daily struggle of someone who leads a psychologically unstable life and is hopelessly caught up in a destructive web full of self-pity and grief. A tormented mind who's looking for an answer to the question why his life is such a failure. Ben is firmly convinced that there are times in your life that are all-determining and that ensure that your life follows a certain path. And the fact that his conception caused his would-be-sister to be torn out of his life, seems to be such a determining factor to him. Is it possible his life could drastically change into something happier when he finds that missing link called Hanna? And this rebellious young lady with mischievous eyes and a very nice smile also believes in the phenomenon of quantum entanglement. It means that two objects are connected in such a way that, even though they are physically separated, one can't be without the other. A spiritual connection that could cause a turnaround.

Going further into detail isn't really advisable. Let me say that Ben's realistic vision is rather cloudy and therefore he completely misses the crystal-clear message Tabby (Diana Bang) radiates. Frankly, I thought it was a sublime film. A bit morbid though. And perhaps some people will be a bit embarrassed and admit that laughter about a depression and unsuccessful suicide attempts feels unacceptable. But in a bizarre way I found it really funny. And also Thomas Middleditch and Jess Weixler are magnificent and perfectly casted. Middleditch reminded me of Adam Sandler. The same intonation and sad look. The same hopeless figure but funny this time. Jess Weixler, on the other hand, is a beautiful appearance whose seductive gaze makes you forget your worries. The day I suffer from severe depression, I hope to meet such a Hanna.

Well, magic realism and quantum mechanics aren't things that people think about when it comes to romance. And I'm sure that a confidential file isn't easy to deprive at an adoption office. But still this film attracted me by its uniqueness and I loved the fragments of 50's/60's music. Maybe the movie is just a little too short to deepen the final outcome some more. "Entanglement" is simply a delightful and charming film. But I wouldn't recommend it to an amorous couple to go and watch it on Valentine's Day.

295. Entanglement. A movie with Dwight Shrute's brother.
tfminfl23 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
A pretty depressing story about a pretty depressed dude. Ben, played by Dwight Shrute's brother, hasn't had it so well lately, his marriage fell apart, he just tried to kill himself, but answered a knock on his door instead, which saves his life, he's got an extremely nosy neighbor, cute as well. And then the phone rings, it's Dad, he's having a heart attack. Ben makes it to the hospital just in time to see Dad head off into surgery, and to listen to a quite bizarre confession. On the day Ben's parents adopted a baby girl, they found out Mom was pregnant and they had to send the baby back. Dad has always felt guilty about it, and know Ben wants to seek her out, the sister he almost had. And when he does finally find her, its nothing like what he expects, and goes on a pretty crazy ride. Though it was a bit predictable at times, it was still a well told story worth a watch. It was most time fun, still left flat impression
pkpera13 May 2018
Low budget, indie (?) movie. Acting, direction, camera work were fine. Start was interesting and intriguing - there was some fractal World type philosophy at start, although without that word. Funniest moment was probably that car steal at beginning. Not really a comedy. Not really a drama. Romantic - very little. Still, mixture could work, but there was almost nothing not seen, and it became predictable somewhere at middle. Main (anti)hero did not have job, at least that was impression - so, we could say that he had too much free time - for stupid ideas. I wondered couple time how he managed to pay bills, especially when he never had money by self. But that's very common in many movies - young people living fine, even spending money pretty well, while no job. Maybe their main problem is lack of reality, realism ? OK, maybe people watching this kind rather, than some depression caused at workplace, by bad economic perspective. And this movie served well escaping from realism, even with simpler realistic message. Probably more interesting for younger audience.

This is not a rom-com.
HomeOnMars13 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Unlike how it is considered by others, I don't think this movie is a romance comedy. Sure, there is a romantic component, however, as it slowly turns out, the romance is not what it seems to be. This is not exactly a surprise either; the clues are literally everywhere and are really hard to miss. This is not bad, however, as this "not-being-a-surprise" actually makes narrative sense, which is why I like this movie- it all adds up in the end. Except for the ending, which indeed is a little bit rush.

Gangly, Modern Melodrama
nitro728 January 2019
Laden with phony dialogue & tired tropes straight out of an obnoxious/self-righteous 90s indie, this gangly, modern melodrama somewhat redeems itself for those with the fortitude to stick it out (much like its main character).

Interesting
DVK12349 December 2019
Canadiana indie; recognized the pharmacist and the dad (they're ubiquitous in Canadian productions). Interesting story. Great acting by main character and sweet romance played out with caring neighbour. I actually didn't see where the story was going; thought it was clever.

Manic Pixie Dream Cliché
Pudding_Bunny21 January 2019
The only redeeming parts of this movie are the Wes Andersonesque opening sequence and the main character's charmingly Canadian low-effort-suicide-attempt montage that follows.

By the end you will have wished he succeeded.

Enjoyed this
GrammarMatters24 December 2018
I really quite enjoyed this movie. It gave me a feeling at times that the writing is a bit similar to Hal Harley. (Whatever happened to that genius anyways.)

I found much of this quite humorous and fun, and, I must say, I'd rather watch something like this, where the characters feel so real and vivid, than the latest $100 million dollar comic book turned movie fake action stupidity.

I guess maybe this movie isn't for everybody - and you'll probably enjoy it more if you're smart, and have learned about psychology - in an attempt to understand yourself and your messed up family, etc.

What I'm getting at is this will probably appeal best to people with a bit of self-awareness, and those people who aren't just like everybody else.

If you know what I mean.

Complete Waste
mcjensen-0592418 July 2023
What's jarring about this film is how tremendously awful the dialogue is. People simply don't relate to each other in this manner at all. The fact that it's all unreal doesn't matter or make any of the tripe forgivable in any way. It's just a meandering mess of scenes where as time goes by you loathe each character more and more and want awful things to happen to them. These supposedly odd, quirky films rarely work, and only art house snobs rave about them. Annoying soundtrack. Crappy editing. Cringe dialogue. All the components are in place for an annoying yawn fest of a viewing experience. Skip.

Kind of worth sitting through
vklv200220 January 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Jess Weixler is awesome in this movie. It may be worth watching just for her performance here. I have seen her in other movies, but she is just magnetic in "Entanglement".

Diana Bang is amazing here! From the beginning, I just had a feeling this whole movie was about her. Spoiler, yes, but this isn't a whodunnit mystery movie. Any mildly intelligent person should be able to figure this out. I rated this movie pretty low, but it may be worth watching just for Diana Bang's performance.

The main actor is pretty much insufferable. I don't think I've seen him in other movies, and I hope I never do. This is really a 7/10 movie, but it's a 4/10 recommendation from me because it was such a challenge to be stuck in a room with Middleditch for 2 hours or whatever.

Warning: Spoilers
A few giggles along the way. Pretty cute indie flick. Good storyline, however a little hollywood at the end. call me morbid or complex but i prefer an indie film to be a little more complicated. good storyline. easy going,i like slow, meaningful. If the ending did not seem like it was rushed i would have scored it a solid 9.
