13 hours ago | MovieWeb | See recent MovieWeb news »

Sony Pictures has already released two Smurfs: The Lost Village trailers, but as we get closer to the April 7 release, there is one character who hasn't been seen until now. Sony Pictures Animation debuted a new photo that offers our first look at SmurfWillow, voiced by the iconic Julia Roberts. There haven't been any details about this character released quite yet, but this photo shows SmurfWillow alongside Papa Smurf, voiced by Mandy Patinkin.

This photo from People shows SmurfWillow is wearing the same type of red hat as Papa Smurf, although nothing else has been revealed about any sort of connection between these two characters. People did catch up with Julia Roberts, though, who offered a brief statement about why she wanted to join the voice cast of this animated adventure. ‘Moana’: How Disney’s Sci-Tech-Winning Drawing System Aided the Oscar Contender

17 January 2017 10:52 AM, PST | Indiewire | See recent Indiewire news »

Disney’s innovative Meander drawing system, utilized on the Oscar-winning “Paperman” and “Feast” shorts, and one of 18 recipients of this year’s Academy Sci-Tech Award, was integral to “Moana’s” 2D/CG integration.

“It was used extensively by effects to do shot planning, and during the hand-drawn prologue, and on everything that was hand-drawn during the [Lin-Manuel Miranda] song, ‘You’re Welcome,'” Brian Whited, Disney’s senior software engineer, told IndieWire. He designed and developed Meander and will receive the Academy’s Sci-Tech Award on February 11th at the Beverly Wilshire.

Marlon West, the VFX supervisor, did drawings to guide the CG, and the effects animators ended up using those drawings directly in the final film,” added Whited. “They included the lightning bolts coming off of Maui’s hook. He found »

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson Mourns Uncle Jimmy ‘Superfly’ Snuka: Inside the Samoan Family’s Wrestling Roots

17 January 2017 9:10 AM, PST | PEOPLE.com | See recent PEOPLE.com news »

Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka, one of the earliest superstars of professional wrestling, died Sunday. For fans of the sport in the 1980s, Snuka’s signature move, the “Superfly Splash” — a jump from the top rope of the ring onto a prone opponent — electrified audiences.

Snuka’s death was announced by Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson on Sunday, which might have given some people pause, if only because the true extent of connections among professional wrestling’s clan of Polynesian and Samoan wrestlers is relatively unknown to the general public at large.

Snuka was technically related to Johnson by marriage — making him the »

Lin-Manuel Miranda has moved from rapping about the Washington Administration to rapping about the Bartlett Administration. The Tony-winning “Hamilton” creator and “Moana” songwriter has released a new rap set for “The West Wing Weekly,” a podcast that provides in-depth analysis on every single episode of Aaron Sorkin’s famed Bush-era political drama. The show features guest appearances from former political staffers and is co-hosted by “West Wing” cast member Joshua Malina, who provides an insider’s perspective. For this episode, Miranda collaborated with the podcast creator, Hrishikesh Hirway, to create “What’s Next?”, a song named after Martin Sheen’s oft-repeated catchphrase during his run. »

‘Beauty and the Beast’: Ariana Grande & John Legend Will Cover the Title Song

12 January 2017 2:30 PM, PST | Slash Film | See recent Slash Film news »

It’s a tale as old as time, or at least as old as Disney’s original Beauty and the Beast. The 1991 film kicked off Disney’s long-running tradition of commissioning pop versions of their own songs for their soundtracks — think Demi Lovato’s “Let It Go” on the Frozen soundtrack, or Alessia Cara’s “How Far I’ll Go” on the Moana one. Moana might be great for representation but it's not all heartwarming for Hawaii | Tina Grandinetti

12 January 2017 2:00 PM, PST | The Guardian - Film News | See recent The Guardian - Film News news »

Cultural authenticity makes for terrific marketing – and the film is just one of the Polynesian products Disney is selling

In 2011 John Musker and Ron Clements, the writer-director team responsible for Disney’s animated film Moana, took the first of many research trips to Polynesia, interviewing elders and community members from Samoa, Tahiti and Fiji. It was the beginning of a five-year endeavour to ensure that Moana, a film about a young heroine in a nonspecific region of Polynesia, would do better at depicting Indigenous people and people of colour than Disney had done in the past.

That same year Disney opened the doors to its $800m Aulani resort, part of the Ko Olina resort development on O’ahu in Hawaii. Dressed in an aloha shirt and flip flops, Disney’s chief executive, Bob Iger, said, “We have committed ourselves to ensuring that Aulani is respectful and appreciative of the unique Hawaiian culture and traditions. »

Lin-Manuel Miranda on 'Moana' Music, Potential Egot Status and Staying Positive Under Trump

When Lin-Manuel Miranda started work on Disney’s animated feature Moana nearly three years ago with his musical collaborators, Grammy-winning composer Mark Mancina and Somoan Opetaia Foa’i, Hamilton had yet to hit the stage, much less become a theatrical juggernaut.

But as Miranda developed into a household name, he remained captivated by the story of a teenage girl, Moana, who leaves her South Pacific island to rescue her community. Among the most compelling songs in the tale, which has grossed more than $225 million since its November release, are Miranda’s yearning, uplifting “How Far I’ll Go,” and the tribal “We Know »

The Merc With a Mouth isn’t a character to play by the rulebook, so it’s almost fitting that Deadpool, the scrappy little underdog that arguably became 2016’s biggest success story, has flipped the bird at convention to collect a series of nominations during the most prestigious period on the Hollywood calendar: awards season.

Marquee blockbusters, particularly those based on comic book characters, often struggle to make much of a dent on the awards circuit, but to date, Tim Miller’s R-rated solo movie has landed a Golden Globes nomination and, perhaps most surprising of all, a nomination for a Writer’s Guild Award for Best Adapted Screenplay. Now, you can add the PGAs to Deadpool‘s growing collection.
