Comedy/drama prank call radio talk show
Ekief25 April 2014
Great fun as a jazzy radio show host takes you on a prank call journey - assuming before the days of caller ID! Mini clips within the film highlight current issues, brought about using both drama and humor. Actor Scott Neufville was particularly effective in creating the dual drama/comic character. Scenes from the film comically highlight through twists, turns and consequences of some chose we may encounter in life. The prank calls, mix of characters, built-on plot along side Boston scenery makes for a recipe of laugher and a fun night out. Nice to see a film that was produced and filmed in Boston while incorporating local talent. I highly recommend seeing this film. However, do beware of the next time you answer your phone!

Revenge is best served cold

Warning: Spoilers
I had the pleasure of seeing Against the Jab, a thought-provoking film, at the Boston International Film Festival last month. Though I knew the basic premise of the plot from promotional material associated with the movie, I was very surprised at the unpredictable twists throughout the movie that constantly kept me on my toes wondering where the story would lead.

The bare-bones synopsis is that DJ Mike plays pranks on unsuspecting victims while on-air, which is hilarious for him and his listeners, but often humiliating for those being pranked. Some of the pranks are actually quite cruel/disturbing in nature, though the film tends to underplay this darker element in favor of a lighter tone. In fact, the disparity between the content and the tone is at times jarring, particularly during the big reveal scene (which I won't give away here). DJ Mike gets a taste of his own medicine when his life begins to unravel thanks to the presence of a mysterious but alluring intern at his radio station.

The huge question the movie seems to pose at the end is whether or not DJ Mike deserves the punishment he gets for his on-air and off-air actions. Personally, I am convinced he deserved a harsher fate than the one he received, considering that one of his pranks led to someone's death and he lied, misled and cheated on his wife throughout the movie.

I really enjoyed seeing all the shots of Boston in the film and the acting was for the most part quite good. Clara Lago was in particular excellent as a femme fatale, and Scott Neufville and Lonette McKee were great in their supporting roles as well. The director, Patrick Jerome, did a great job at creating a colorful and challenging film. Overall, I would recommend Against the Jab to anyone who enjoys having their morals questioned and loves crazy twists and unconventional plots.

What a great film
plimotijeune23 April 2014
I recently saw this movie Against The Jab at the AMC theater in downtown Boston. I was amazed by the dual genre the film has that was so powerful. How can someone achieve that? a mix of comedy and drama in the same film that is so well done and successful. When the funny time comes with all the prank phone calls the movie is very funny. On the other side story about DJMike life the story gradually becomes very intense and dramatic. The scenery of Boston was fantastic. By just watching the movie you will see the beauty of the city the aerial shot is mind blowing. I would suggest a little more color correction in the audience reaction shots. Other than that the movie is great.

This is the best film I've seen so far this year. All the actors were wonderful great performances. The entire cast had a great chemistry. Everyone was so natural. the story unfold before your eye as if it is really going on. The movie story line is Awesome. I highly recommend this film Job well done.

Makes the viewer think
angelinaraquelmo24 April 2014
Against the Jab is a beautifully shot film with a winding plot that will keep you excited for what happens next and ultimately satisfy you deeply by its ending.

This film contains a lot of laughs as well as serious scenes and situations that are present in the life of many different Bostonians today. It contains issues and controversies that are facing the city now which makes this film relevant to the times we're living in. The characters are very realistic; excellently written and executed. It also has a sort of moral compass at the end that does not swat the audiences' hands, but makes the viewer think more profoundly about the choices the characters have made throughout the film.

The humor in this movie was quite original and very funny. The chemistry between the actors was great. The story was good and the dramatic scenes were well constructed. This would be rated PG 13 for language. It was shot in Boston and one or two suburban communities. This added to the realism for me.

This type of radio program is common. I've heard the prank calls enough to know that the prank calls in the movie were much funnier than what real radio stations put out. Mr. Patrick Jerome has been making films for years. His films keep getting better and better. This film should be picked up by Hollywood.

Great Movie!
jerryedmond24 May 2015
Rarely do I see any movie twice, but I have watched "Against The Jab" four times, and it was just as compelling and funny the forth time as it was the first time I watched it. The movie is very relevant to today's culture and every day life. The cast did an amazing job. As someone who spent a huge chunk of his life in the greater Boston area, this movie struck a chord with me. Leon Robinson was masterful. The movie is directed by Patrick Jerome, remember this name because I have no doubt that his talent is on par with the likes of John Singleton and Spike Lee. It's intelligently written and brilliantly executed, t's a must see for those who enjoy suspense and laughter. The plot will keep you guessing till the very end.

Relatable and Funny
sjh0827 April 2014
***Against The Jab is a very down to earth and comical film that viewers can relate to. It shows how a sense of humor can have detrimental effects on the personal lives of others.

***This independent film displayed diverse cultures in society and their reactions to prank phone calls. Although some the prank phone calls were very touchy subjects, we can compare ourselves to those being pranked, knowing that we react in funny ways when we are under pressure.

***The superb cinematography brought out the best views of the city of Boston.

***I particularly enjoyed the comedy from different perspectives and the surprise drama of the lead character.

***This film has an all around good vibe and excellent performance from international actors and actresses.

****Thank you for a wonderful film!!!****

A great indy film (no spoilers!)
jtem0126 April 2014
I think indy films are great. And it's not a case where the indies are great "Despite" their small budgets and limited resources, it's more like they're great BECAUSE OF those limitations. The process of indy film making takes an artist, his ideas, his vision, the metal of his artistry and smashes it against the immovable stone of his limited resources -- resulting in a spark of creativity that no big-budget Hollywood movie can match. Patrick Jerome is one such indy film maker, one such artist, and he does not disappoint.

Avoiding any spoilers here, let me tell you that Patrick Jerome is a gifted screen writer who weaves a tale that is on the edge of respectability without ever crossing the line. "Against The Jab" centers on DJ Mike, played by veteran actor Leon, a man who has it all. The host of a popular radio show renowned for it's prank phone calls ("Jabs"), DJ Mike rides high on the crest of success until the fallout from one prank call threatens to end his radio career, even as some bad personal choices close in on his private life. But the film is not all drama. The prank phone calls, all wonderfully played out on screen, are hilarious to an almost shocking degree. I could recommend the film on the strength of them alone!

Amazing

One of the best movies I have seen in recent times. It is a perfect blend of comedy and mystery. It keeps you engrossed till the very end. I also enjoyed the beauty of Boston in the movie. Mr. Jerome has done an amazing job. All the actors in the movie were fantastic. Leon Robinson has done a wonderful job as a Radio Jockey. The international cast also did a commendable job. The story line is very strong. Emotions run very high while watching the movie and also the climax is jaw dropping. Screenplay and cinematography have the lifted the movie to a new level. Once again, a wonderful experience. I highly recommend everyone to watch this movie!!!!!!

DJ Mike's prank phone calls on his radio show shatter lives. Does he go too far?
Neuf125 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Like most films of its kind, Against The Jab is light-hearted and funny as we laugh out loud through a series of prank phone calls made by the movie's main character, DJ Mike, at the expense of hapless victims whose dirty laundry is broadcast on air for the world to hear. At times the film is titillating like when DJ Mike, also a newlywed, almost seems to flirt with a new intern at the radio station where he works...

At least it starts out that way...

We as an audience become spectators to an emotional roller-coaster ride that is no longer titillating nor funny for Mike who is forced to reexamine whether or not his prank phone calls go too far when the film suddenly takes a dramatic turn for the more serious.

The cinematic value and impact of Against The Jab blurs the creative distinction between independent films and their Hollywood counterparts which makes it a must see... Even after seeing it the first, second, or third time...

Great movie with a great twist at the end!
vcora21025 April 2014
This was a great movie. I was happy to see some actors I have grown up with like Leon. The movie played the line well between comedy and drama, which seemed to keep you on the edge of your seat. I like the way DJ Mike's wife portrayed a grieving wife and convinced me of what I so encounter at home when a mysterious phone call or number shows up on my phone.

I also enjoyed the great landscape and scenic shots of our Boston. The Director does a great job of showing you Boston and it's iconic buildings. I caught myself saying "I know where that is!" more often than not.

As a fellow prankster, I too wonder "how far is too far?" This movie shows you exactly what happens when it does go "too far." ;)

DJ Mike Makes fun of people's life with prank phone calls on his radio show but, how far is too far?
czman37526 April 2014
I saw "Against The Jab" this past week. This movie is put together very well. People hear the term independent film and assume that those type of films are sub par, all that term means is that a movie studio didn't help with the film it was funded independently. This film sets the bar for Boston independent films. It has the look of Hollywood and was filmed in Boston. Boston should be proud to have a film like this that features not only a very historic city but the actors that came from the city. Everything about this movie works, from the story all the way to the acting. "Against The Jab" is a definite must see. If you don't see it you are really missing out. This movie is funny and Dramatic at the same time. Congratulations to the director for directing such a great cast and making the movie so real. He really brought out the best in the actors. Leon, Clara Lago, and Lonette McKee were great, but you have to give it to the Boston Actors, they really hung in their with these Hollywood actors and nailed their performance. I can not say enough about this movie. It was a lot of fun to watch and it never got old. It is a great movie.
