Storyline

After almost drowning in a lake, Madison finds herself bound to a life of fear. Unable to describe what happened to her during the moments she was underwater, she begins to develop hydrophobia: an abnormal fear of water. Crippled by her post trauma, Madison attempts to shut out the world but her fear intensifies and she is faced with the vision of a dark figure that haunts her day and night. After watching her struggle for one year with the phobia and visions, Madison's four friends attempt an unconventional intervention in which they accidentally open a floodgate to a dark place where none of them are safe. As Madison and her friends dive deeper into the dark history of this figure that haunts them, it reaches out and begins dragging them to a horrifying place that they can never come back from. Dry
12 February 2016 | by (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

This film has a great concept; Freddy Krueger, but with water instead of dreams. It lends itself to a multitude of precarious situations and deaths, some of which are explored here. There is also a lot of potential to create a franchise similar to Final Destination since the Drownsman is always coming and you can never escape water.

The problem this film has is that it possesses very little character. None of the cheesy 80s, to mid 90s, charm that Nightmare on Elm Street had, or the edgy style of the late 90s to early 2000s like in the first Final Destination. Instead we have a cast of five who are all supposed to be friends of some sort but we never see any chemistry or even really any dialogue that really explores this. Plus there is no attempt at humour, or shock or 'wow, that's awesome' moments so as to stick in your mind and draw you in deeper.

Instead you get a film that takes itself far too seriously and ends up coming off as very dry because of it. With the potential to be franchised there is some life left in the character of the Drownsman, but in its current form it will never truly make waves.

Overall this movie is a solid modern horror, but could have been so much more if it had some personality put into it.
