This game marks the debut of Charles Martinet as Mario's voice actor in a video game. He would go on to be the official voice actor for Mario in several media until 2023, when he was announced to be retiring from the role. Martinet would then be replaced with Kevin Afghani, starting with Super Mario Bros. Wonder (2023).
This is not the first official media to feature Charles Martinet as the voice of Mario; he previously participated in several public events showcasing "Mario in Real-Time", a primitive motion-capture rigging system that allowed the character to speak to audiences (with Stevie Coyle standing-in), as early as 1991, and also did voices for the 1992 Super Mario Bros. pinball game by Gottlieb, for which he was neither paid nor credited.
