The film was shot in twelve days.
At least one version of the opening credits reads "Killer Beach," but the closing credits give the movie title as "The Sand."
Nikki Leigh's first feature film nude scene. She became a Playboy Playmate in May 2012 just before they started filming and she was cast mainly for her willingness to perform nude. Originally they were planning on her being fully nude when she woke up hungover on the beach, but the director decided on the day of shooting that it made more sense if she was just topless. Leigh said she was fine doing it either way.
Director Isaac Gabaeff said in an interview that they were originally working on pre-production for a drama about four people in a sailing boat going between islands in Hawaii, but there was a sudden problem that caused the film to collapse. So he and producers had discussions about what to do. Everyone still wanted to move forward and make a movie so Gabaeff started looking at scripts and right away The Sand emerged as a clear winner from that process. They began production right away.
In 2012 filming started in California and filming was completed later that year. Released in 2015.
