Writer/Director/Editor Michael Felker knows his way around time-shifting, metaphysical labors of love, having edited Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead’s Something in the Dirt, Synchronic, The Endless, and Spring. Felker’s feature directorial debut, Things Will Be Different, seamlessly fits into the Benson/Moorhead cinematic universe, introducing a fractured sibling relationship put through the physical and emotional wringer when they play with forces they don’t quite understand.
Estranged siblings Sidney and Joseph fall into old habits like no time has passed at all when they rendezvous at a diner. That’s largely due to Joseph having a large bag of cash grabbed from an armed robbery, and the authorities are rapidly closing in. The siblings quickly make their way to an abandoned farmhouse with instructions on how to escape their current reality. The plan is to wait out the cops from the safety of an alternate timeline,...

The Spring 2024 anime season is marking the return of a number of classic anime, like Black Butler, that haven't received any new content in nearly a decade. There are also a number of brand-new anime, like the highly anticipated Kaiju No. 8, debuting this spring. Much like the very successful Winter anime season, Spring is shaping up to be even more exciting.
With the Winter 2024 anime season finally coming to a close, a new batch of seasonal anime is fast approaching. Winter had some incredible new and returning series, like Solo Leveling and Classroom Of The Elite. So far, it seems as though Spring isn't slowing down this momentum whatsoever.
From the return of beloved anime such as My Hero Academia, and new series that will likely take the world by storm such as Kaiju No. 8, there is a lot to be excited about in the next three months.

“Love and death are the two great hinges on which all human sympathies turn.”
-B.R. Haydon
Love and death are the two most powerful forces in human experience. They are the engines of our stories because they are the engines of our existence. Our hopes, desires, heartbreaks, and fears so often hang on these two factors—ever-present and constantly in tension. Horror, more often than not, preoccupies itself with the latter but from time to time, a really great horror love story comes along. Aaron Moorhead and Justin Benson’s Spring is not only a great love story but an acknowledgment of the eternal balance of love and death that connects us to each other, the ancient and ongoing human story, and perhaps even the infinite.

There was much to be thankful for in 2023. Besides new works by several legendary directors, there were personal opportunities that allowed me to spread a larger net and take stock of the cinema landscape from a more privileged vantage point. I got to attend the Cannes and Toronto film festivals for the first time and also became a voter for some key year-end awards. The experience of thus watching films, before most of my cinephile brethren, allowed me to contemplate how much campaigns and narratives can alter a film’s reception and trajectory.
What has come into sharper relief, and what is evident from the list below too, is that Cannes has the lock on much of the best product of the year––at least anything not...

Parliament of Rooks is a tale of dark fantasy, forbidden romance, menacing forces, and enchanting characters, inspired by the striking, gregarious, black-feathered bird, known as a rook.
"Parliament of Rooks is my homage to stories I grew up loving by fellow Brits like Neil Gaiman's Sandman and Emily Bronte's Wuthering Heights,” says Abigail Jill Harding. "This is the first series I've written and drawn myself. It's very ambitious and I'm excited for people to read it.

Although Loki’s second season has been well received by fans and critics alike, most of the issues with the story so far have been about its nonsensical time travel plot, the scale (and impact) of its dying timelines, and Loki’s somewhat baffling need to save the Tva given that the multiverse is trying to free itself from He Who Remains’ temporal loom. In the penultimate episode of the season, the show deftly addresses all those issues, and forces us to accept that they were never really issues in the first place.
To date, the only real context we have had for new timelines dying has been squiggly lines on a screen, but “Science/Fiction” finally makes them feel real to us. At first, it’s just a McDonald’s meal disappearing from atop Sylvie’s car. Then, Loki’s bourbon vanishes. By the time we...

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is causing quite a buzz in the MCU, but fans hoping for a seamless continuation from the Netflix series may be in for some disappointment. The upcoming show is set to be a soft reboot, with not all key members of Daredevil’s team making a return.
Adding to the letdown, fans will witness several episodes where Daredevil won’t be in his iconic suit. The focus of the show is shifting towards a legal drama, exploring Daredevil’s life post-hanging up his vigilante identity. This parallels Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin, trying to leave his past behind.
The studio’s decision to veer away from the current show is attributed to it being deemed “a bit boring.” Instead, they are taking a fresh approach, aligning more with the faithful comic version of the character. While some previously filmed content will be retained, many elements of the story will be reconstructed from scratch.

‘Daredevil: Born Again’ is one of the most hyped-up projects in the MCU currently. Although fans have been hoping that the show will, in some ways, continue where Netflix’s production left off. It’s been known for quite a while now that the show will instead be a soft reboot, with not all core members of Daredevil’s team returning to the screens.
Fans were also quite disappointed to learn that the show would feature quite a number of episodes where Daredevil does not suit up at all. The show was supposed to go in the direction of legal drama, focusing on Daredevil’s life after he drops his vigilante mantle, trying to put his past behind him, just like Wilson Fisk, aka Kingpin.

Daredevil: Born Again is getting a complete creative team overhaul after Kevin Feige was unsatisfied with the direction and outcome of the series so far. The new showrunner, Dario Scardapane, has experience working on Marvel and Netflix series like The Punisher, while directors Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead have recently joined the MCU. Marvel Studios is implementing a new strategy to avoid past production mistakes, which includes dedicating showrunners solely to TV productions and aiming for more multi-season series like the successful Loki.
With filming still on pause, Daredevil: Born Again is undergoing a restructuring process and has already found a new showrunner and directors for the series centered on Charlie Cox's version of the Man Without Fear. Earlier this month, it was revealed that Kevin Feige had decided to make some major changes to the upcoming series Daredevil: Born Again, as after seeing the result of what they...

Marvel Studios’ Daredevil: Born Again has rounded out its revamped creative team with a new showrunner and directors. Dario Scardapane has been tapped as showrunner and directing team Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead (Loki) are set to direct the Charlie Cox series, sources confirm to Deadline.
The series has been revamping its creative team after determining the show wasn’t working as is. Head scribes Chris Ord and Matt Corman and episodic directors were let go, but remain EPs on the two-season series. Daredevil, which first aired on Netflix, follows Cox as Matt Murdock, a blind attorney turned crimefighting superhero.
Less than half of the series’ 18 episodes were shot. Marvel plans to keep some footage though the series will pivot from being a procedural show to having a more serialized focus. Scardapone will write the new episodes, incorporating what was already shot, we’re told.

“Daredevil: Born Again” has found its new creative team.
Dario Scardapane, who wrote and executive produced on Netflix’s Marvel series “The Punisher,” will serve as the showrunner for the new “Daredevil” show, after previous head writers Chris Ord and Matt Corman exited amid a major creative overhaul. Ord and Corman will still be credited as executive producers.
Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead — who directed on Marvel’s “Moon Knight” and are the lead directors on Season 2 of “Loki” — will step in to direct the rest of the first season of “Daredevil: Born Again.” As part of the show’s creative overhaul, Marvel released the previously hired directors for Season 1 after production shut down amid the SAG-AFTRA strike. Elements of the material that were already shot will be incorporated into the series, but the show overall is meant to head in a new direction.

Wang Bing might not have released any new films in the last half-decade, but that is only because he’s been hard at work shooting his new trilogy. Captured between 2014 and 2019, the director’s new project documents the social and economic transformation of 21st-century China through the eyes of young migrant workers laboring in textile factories in the town of Zhili, outside Shanghai. Youth (Spring), one of two new films from the director to premiere at Cannes alongside Man in Black, will now get a theatrical release from Icarus Films starting on November 10 at Metrograph and the first trailer has arrived.
Ethan Vestby said in his review, “Wang Bing’s Youth (Spring) is the first of a supposed trilogy shot from 2014 to 2019 chronicling Millennial and Gen Z (consciously always listing the age when onscreen text introduces a new character) China. And judging by the three-and-a-half-hour runtime, it seems like many...

Acclaimed director Wang Bing, this year’s guest of honor at the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, will be using his IDFA platform to highlight nonfiction cinema of his native China.
The festival, which runs from Nov. 8-19, announced the 10 films Bing has selected to be screened at IDFA – one of the perquisites of being named guest of honor. Among the documentaries he’s choosing to highlight are Old Men (1999), directed by Lina Yang; Wheat Harvest (2008), directed by Tong Xu, and IDFA Bertha Fund-supported Last Train Home (2009) by Lixin Fan, “documenting the millions of migrant factory workers that travel home for Spring Festival each year.” (Scroll to see Bing’s full top 10 list).
Director Wang Bing attends the Cannes Film Festival May 19, 2023.
The documentaries chosen by Bing “and their politics are subtle in their film language,” IDFA noted in a release, “representing a wave of filmmaking rarely shown internationally.

Speaking about his underseen 1970 film British Sounds, Jean-Luc Godard said it was important that the bourgeois heard oppressive factory noise the working class must endure every day. This made me think of a job I had right after graduating university nearly a decade ago. Not wanting to leave Montreal for personal reasons, but limited in work opportunities due to my lack of French, I––in desperation––took work at a warehouse assembling light fixtures. Lasting from the middle of 2014 to the early months of 2015, my overwhelming memories of that time (beyond its general misery) are the sounds. In particular the radio which was on all day, as fellow workers and I weren’t allowed to listen to anything with headphones or earbuds. Working an eight-hour shift and finding out that Top 40 radio does, in fact, just play practically the same 9 or 10 songs over and over––thus hearing Taylor Swift’s...

Wang Bing made his directorial debut with an astonishing odyssey through the dilapidated structures of the danwei, or state-owned factory, that were the norm for work in China until opening and reform gradually gave rise to more private enterprise. The 551-minute 2002 film, Tie Xi Qu: West of the Tracks, telegraphed its intentionality both through its politics, starkly depicting the lives of factory workers and the strain put on Shenyang’s industrial Tiexi district, as joblessness loomed. The film’s intuitive, necessarily lo-fi aesthetic allowed the artifacting visuals of its Dv shooting format to become a conduit through which to further imagine the fate of the eroding spaces of the danwei.
The monumental achievement of West of the Tracks galvanized the field of Chinese independent documentary in the early 2000s to such a degree that a new generation of filmmakers seemed to form almost instantly and take specific cues from Wang’s DIY ethos.

Jenna Ortega has several movies in the works, but her most exciting upcoming release isn't Beetlejuice 2 or Scream 7. Ortega, who turns 21 at the end of September, has become one of Hollywood's most sought-after actors. Though she's been working in the industry for over a decade, she truly rose to superstardom in 2022. Following memorable roles in titles like Jane the Virgin, Stuck in the Middle, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, and The Fallout, 2022 saw Ortega star in four movies: Scream, Studio 666, X, and American Carnage. Of course, her biggest release of 2022 was playing the titular role of Wednesday Addams in Netflix's Wednesday series.
Considering Wednesday was a massive success for Netflix, it was a no-brainer decision to renew the show for a second season. In fact, Ortega will also serve as an executive producer for Wednesday season 2. Granted, it's unclear when the follow-up season will be released, considering Ortega is extremely busy these days.

On the surface, the whimsy of Pee-wee’s Playhouse appears to be worlds apart from the solemnity of Boyz N the Hood, other than the curious resemblance between Cowboy Curtis and Furious Styles. But it’s no coincidence that Laurence Fishburne and other key creatives were part of both projects.
As a USC film student in the late 1980s, John Singleton spent one summer working as a security guard-slash-production assistant on the set of Pee-wee’s Playhouse. “John was the lowest of lowly PAs,” recalled Fishburne on Late Night with Conan O’Brien in 1995. “He was working on the door and his job was to stop people at the door and go, ‘Are you supposed to be here? Do you have the proper ID?’”
Singleton would press Fishburne for stories of working with Spike Lee, as the actor had appeared in School Daze a few months prior. The budding filmmaker...

Amaze is launching a feature that brings new revenue streams to TikTok. The creator commerce platform will empower its users to sell directly to their fans by integrating itself into TikTok Shop.
Thanks to the Amaze integration, the platform’s users will be able to display and sell custom products through their personal creator stores. Thanks to TikTok’s growing array of live shopping tools, sellers will be able to hawk their products through videos and live streams while Amaze handles the financial logistics behind the scenes.
Amaze greatly expanded its available vending options when it acquired ecommerce pioneer Spring last November. At the time of the deal, there were about 5.5 million creator stores across all platforms that were connected to Spring. Amaze is also the parent company of creator economy firm Outfits.
By teaming up with TikTok, California-based Amaze is betting on the viability of TikTok Shop in the United States.

My Morning Jacket made their latest appearance at Bonnaroo another memorable one when they debuted a cover of Kate Bush’s resurgent hit “Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)” during their late night performance on Saturday.
Providing their own spin on the song with galloping guitars and Jim James’ passionate vocals standing in contrast to Bush’s more delicate delivery, Mmj added a cover to their repertoire well worth playing again. Watch the performance below.
Mmj also debuted their take on Traffic’s “Feelin’ Alright?” and paid tribute to late Fleetwood Mac keyboardist/vocalist Christine McVie when James weaved in lyrics from “Songbird” into “Phone Went West” from their 2001 sophomore album, At Dawn. Check out the setlist for their nearly three-hour performance below.
“Running Up That Hill” saw a massive surge in renewed interest last year after a prominent placement in Stranger Things Season 4. In addition to achieving a new peak of No.

PewDiePie is debuting a new look, and Amaze will help him share his style with his fans. The creator commerce platform is now the exclusive producer and distributor of all official PewDiePie merch.
The partnership between Amaze and the Swedish creator (whose real name is Felix Kjellberg) will result in a number of new items. According to Amaze, PewDiePie fans can expect “limited-edition releases,” “special collaborations,” and “exclusive designs” inspired by the gamer who once reigned as YouTube’s most-subscribed creator.
Those upcoming items may not be what Kjellberg’s community is used to. The PewDiePie identity is undergoing a rebrand that inform the partnership with Amaze. The landing page builder shared some fresh PewDiePie threads in an introductory blog post, and there’s nary a brofist in sight. Instead, Kjellberg is buying into the anime-style aesthetic that has been peddled by creators like SypherPK.
