Scarlett's making records, Luke's making time, Rayna's making deals, Juliette's making choices, and Tandy's making like a tree in tonight's installment.
Rayna has hooked Scarlett up with Liam to cut some songs for her debut album. Scarlett is wrung out from the road and not feeling Liam's brusque vibe. He starts asking her personal questions to get at what she wants to write about and she doesn't want to share. He knows she's talented though so he swipes her journal, making her very angry. He picks a particular poem and asks her what it's about. She explains the imagery is about her abusive/unpredictable/mentally ill mother. She has a breakthrough and they stay in the studio all night. He gives her some pep pills to keep her up so she can cut her vocal which is devastatingly emotional. When she returns to the studio to record more, she pops another little pill for assistance.
Deacon meets with the exec from Belcourt Records who wants Deacon to record a duets album with all of his famous friends. Deacon balks at asking favors. And the exec says he's not a beggar and that these people are his fans. He ruminates. (He also notices Megan is gone a lot with her big case as he ruminates.) When he goes to support Juliette when she's inducted into the Opry he asks her to be on his record but she begs off as the actual favor since she's shedding fans left and right because of her scandal and doesn't want it to hurt him. After thinking on it and talking to Avery of all people, Deacon realizes he doesn't want to be famous he just wants to cut a record and decides that instead of all-star duets he's going to cut a live album at the Bluebird. He and Scarlett toast each other being so happy about getting into their music for artistic reasons.
Someone who is having artistry problems is Layla. She and Will are back at Gunnar's place since Juliette's tour dates are cancelled. She asks Gunnar to write with her but when they sit down and all she can talk about is marketing instead of song ideas he calls her on it. She gets huffy and leaves. She later confesses to Will that she is a blank slate and all she's ever done-- from pagaents to singing-- was to please her parents and she can't break out of that mindset. He tells her he definitely knows about not wanting to disappoint your parents. After Gunnar confronts him about his sham relationship with Layla and the fact that it's stuff like that that led him to nearly take his own life, Will lies awake next to Layla conflicted. Layla goes back to Gunnar and confesses he was right and asks for tips on how to get started as a songwriter.
Rayna and Luke are going full steam ahead. After a somewhat awkward exchange in the studio in front of Liam, Luke gives Rayna a big surprise: A NASCAR team has outfitted one of their cars with her name and likeness and will be running it in an upcoming race. At the unveiling of the car she meets a business bigwig named Boone-- who seems like a Sam Walton type who runs a successful chain of stores. Her album is dropping May 1 and she wants shelf space in those stores. She invites him to the Opry and he invites her to the race.
At the Opry Rayna makes her pitch but Boone puts he off and tells her not to mix business with pleasure and to talk to his VP about shelf space for her album. (Meanwhile, Madde and Daphne seem to have taken to Luke.) She is disappointed. But then the next day at the NASCAR race Luke plays a private concert for sponsors and invites Rayna out to sing her new song and Boone changes his tune saying he'd love to be in business with her and since they're dropping Juliette from their shelves because of the scandal, now he'll have room for Rayna. As much as she could use the boost his stores provide. Rayna ultimately turns him down because she wants her label to be about creative freedom for her artists not commercial restrictions like those set down by Boone.
Jeff happens to attend Luke's NASCAR show and hears Rayna mention her album release date. He calls up his sales people and says to make sure they put out a big album that day and hoard all shelf space for it. Jeff confronts Luke about having Rayna play his show and Luke says he just had his girlfriend come out and sing a song. He also notes that Jeff lost big artists from Edgehill recently and he better be careful if he doesn't want to lose more.
Teddy meets with various lawyers involved with Lamar's case, including Megan, to convince them that Lamar put the hit on Peggy because he thought Teddy was the star witness in his case but he suspects it's Tandy. Sadly, he has no evidence so no one is taking his business on Lamar.
One person who knows he might be right though is Tandy who no longer wants to testify against her father now that Peggy has been killed because she thinks she might be next. She hits the road, telling Rayna she's going to a spa, but is hauled back in by the Feds. She does some tricky legal maneuvering, however, and tells them the info she gave them on a flash drive was obtained after she resigned, therefore it was obtained illegal and is therefore inadmissible. And thus, Lamar's case is dropped and Tandy breathes a sigh of relief.
And finally, there is Juliette.
She practices the "beg for forgiveness" speech Jeff wrote for her to say at her induction into the Grand Ole Opry. She feels alone and confused but then Deacon, Maddie and Daphne, Avery, and her inductor Brad Paisley all help buck her up. Maddie notes that the people criticizing her are bullies and bullies should never win.
So, when the fateful moment comes, instead of giving a speech about how sorry she is, Juliette basically accepts her induction gracioulsy and then tells her haters to suck it and plays a rocking kiss off song about how they shouldn't be putting dirt on her grave just yet. Glenn beams with pride. Jeff is livid.
Afterwards, Rayna comes by her dressing room saying what she did wasn't very smart but it was brave.
Jeff comes in and calls her stupid and drops her from Edgehill. She notes he may be the stupid one since he lost the label's two top grossing artists in six months. She says she may have just burned down the house but she made damn sure he was in it when she lit the match and tells him she'll see him on the unemployment line.
A few days later Glen notes Juliette's career is now officially in free fall and no label will touch her. She tells him to take a nice long vacation on her and says she's actually relieved, since it wasn't any fun being "Juliette Barnes" anymore.
Later she goes to Avery, brings him a meatloaf and talks about losing everything but noting that the one thing she has to have is him. They kiss.
