As Lena deals with the death of her father, Callie finds the funeral to be a trigger for remembering her mother.
The whole episode was rather somber, but with the death of Stef's dad Frank comes a lot of returns. Both Stef and Lena's mothers, Sharon and Dana, return and, as before, Dana and Lena butt heads. But, amongst all the drama of Lena and Dana; Stef dealing with grief in her own way; Lena wanting a baby; and the Callie and Brandon situation, a lot of things are worked out so, while there may not be a clean slate, it does seem with Frank's death, the show is looking to move forward and mark his death as a turning point.
Topic 1: Relationship Status Jesus & Callie
In a very weird move, to me, Jesus decides to invite Emma to the post funeral gathering at his moms' house. Which, considering how Emma is just a friend, seems sort of weird, and I think has given her the impression that maybe something might be there when it comes to Jesus. Now, you could note that a few episodes back she said she had no interest, but in the episode, their eyes were scoping each other out, and their body language made it seem like, Lexi maybe the only thing keeping them from being together.
That aside, another relationship worth talking is the one between Callie and Brandon. With Frank's funeral being a major trigger for Callie, which includes flashbacks of around the time her mom died, Brandon trying to have their relationship be revealed shows how obsessed, and perhaps selfish, this fool is. Though, perhaps "was" is a better term. You see, the ever forward Dana decides to chat with Callie, since her talking to Lena wasn't going to get anywhere, so she tells the girl, point blank, despite the opportunity to be on your own, you need a family, and family doesn't end just because you turn 18. And with this, a possible trigger in itself, Callie runs off and Lena seems a bit more peeved. Going back to the Brandon situation though, with Callie finally opening up about her mother, and seemingly him having an epiphany, he realizes how selfish his feelings are and how Callie has the opportunity to be given so much and yet here Brandon is trying to create a crossroad in her life. But now, he plans to step aside, and despite them exchanging such a sweet moment in them saying "I love you" to each other, it seems they will try to be platonic. Try being a keyword in my opinion.
Topic 2: Parental Issues Stef & Lena
Moving onto their parents, while there are some issues between Lena and Stef about Lena taking prenatal vitamins, most of the story for this episode deals with their relationship with their least favorite parent. For Stef, that is Frank who, as his priest says, was really trying to deal with the fact his faith and love of his daughter didn't fit, but the real interesting bit, which was weird since with Frank's death you'd think Stef would be the center of attention, is Lena and Dana. As with Dana's visit during Mariana's quinceañera, she and Lena butt heads over the various things which have left Lena seemingly scarred for life. And, I don't know about the rest of you, but I so wish they would explore this more. For the most part, Lena is very sugar sweet, but bring Dana into the situation and she gets some bite and really gives her character some oomph.
Topic 3: Trouble Brewing - Mike
But, while Lena shuts her mom down this episode, and Stef says goodbye, seemingly the reason why a lot of these old plots are being followed up on is because something major is about to happen. If you remember, Mike shot Mariana and Jesus' mom's boyfriend and killed him. This was due to him thinking Stef was in danger. Now, a few days before Mike is due back on the force, a reporter writes about the incident and paints Mike in a terrible way. With this, a few things happen. For one, his suspension is likely extended, then two, he maybe end up prosecuted for the man's death.
Thus leading to a possibility that Mike is about to be exposed for not only the guy's death, but his drinking, and this man we see who seemingly is recovering from alcoholism, seems like he may go back down that hard road. After all, Brandon is still distant toward him, Mike still seems to have lost his friends once Stef left, and all he does now is try to be a part of Stef's new family, with some success. Still though, things aren't looking up for our favorite third wheel.
