Storyline

King Horik returns from Wessex with only one boat and his forces severely depleted. He tells Ragnar that Athelstan was killed in battle. He convinces Ragnar that they need to make peace with Jarl Borg as they need both his boats and his warriors if they want any hope of raiding Wessex. Rollo is sent to convince Borg to come to Kattegat. Siggy continues to act as a spy for Horik, saying she does so for Rollo. Bjorn takes an interest in a servant girl, Porunn. Lagertha has returned to her home only to face the wrath of her new husband. After a drunken feast, she is severely beaten by his men. In Wessex, King Ecbert entrusts Athelstan with a great secret. Quotes

King Ecbert: Come and see. Look around. You thought those paintings were all that there was. But of all Roman things, these are the most precious. Tales of the Caesars. The fall and ruin of Roman Britain. Tales of emperors and empires... It's the stuff of dreams, Athelstan. It's the very fabric of dreams.
King Ecbert: You can read them, of course.
Athelstan: Yes. Yes, I can read them.
King Ecbert: Good. That is why I've chosen you.
Athelstan: What do you mean?
King Ecbert: Well, I've chosen you to be the guardian of these books and their secrets. I want you to copy ...

This is not your father's History Channel

This humble reviewer thought that the History Channel has reached it zenith with the superb Hatfields and McCoys series (which if you missed, you should try to find, it is wonderful) I was wrong. This series is as good as any I have ever seen, almost hypnotic. No matter if you call it historical, or call it current (because of the universal themes of human nature), or you can even call it "Fred" it you want. It is still superbly written and produced drama.

Think about it. Jeffifer Lopez not so long ago spent an entire Hollywood theatrical feature trying to tell the story of a woman who stops taking abuse from her husband, and fights back.

It is this episode, that theme is not only covered, but it is presented better than the Lopez movie, with more viewer impact, and in a matter of only moments.

Leaving ample time for all the other plot arcs to move forward.

Extraordinary.
