I'm disappointed in some of the criticism of this episode. We need to start with the fact that these are two pretty flawed characters. Holder is a former meth user; Linden has so much baggage she could work for Samsonite. When she killed Skinner, it was in a rage. If you accept that, you can also accept the fact that she is her worst critic. She is utterly and hopelessly on the side of right. Her actions may have been sloppy and poorly thought out, but that whole business of putting a gun in the hand of a person has led to more convictions than we can imagine. Now she is a murderer, at least in the eyes of the law. She shot a defenseless man, as despicable as he was. I think it becomes pretty easy for one detached from such an episode to say what they would have done. I remember my junior high kids talking about what they would do if they ever had a gun pointed at them. If this has ever happened to you (and it has to me), you will think quite differently. I've never taken a life either, but I can't imagine the horror of it.

So we begin the next season with guilt oozing out of the pores of the characters. They have disposed of a body and are on edge. They are more sullen than usual and the other people in their lives are beginning to look at them. So now they investigate a horrible murder. A rich family has been decimated by a murderer. Four members of this affluent family have been executed, including a ten year old girl. The eldest, a son, is the lone survivor. He has injuries to his head, blunt force trauma, and can't remember anything. Holder already has him convicted, even though there is little other than his presence that makes him a suspect. He has been attending a military academy (one of those where kids are sent to get them straightened out) run by a by the book woman who is obviously up to something. She commands the "troops" like a career Marine. Linden has her doubts. There are two issues going on. LInden was supposed to get rid of the murder weapon and the cartridge. She has foolishly left them on a table in her house. Holder has news as well. His girlfriend has announced her pregnancy. He didn't take the news well, but he has begun to become sort of maternal. Two things take place in the last minute that will shape how things proceed. I am so hooked. I see that the overall rating of this piece is 8.6. I hope that a couple more people weigh in on this in print.

A very satisfying 4th season
hawktwo12 October 2014
Once again I found myself rapidly pulled into the characters and the season's plot. As with the prior 3 seasons, there are constant twists and turns to the plot, some of them brought on by the personalities of the leading detectives.

The relationship between the two detectives is tested, mainly because last season ended with them covering up their own guilt in the disappearance of a serial killer.

The writing is top notch; I did not figure out the ending until it was revealed. Those folks with evil intentions sometimes inadvertently produce good results; others with good intentions produce evil.

S4 episode 1

Warning: Spoilers
Spoiler alert. I am just beginning to watch episode 1 and again I have an issue with the way the writers have Linden and Holder handle the shooting of Skinner at the end of season 3. They would have trouble with the shooting, no doubt, but since they are covering up, it would be much easier to simply put Skinner's gun in his hand. Linden could have detectives get the ring from Skinner's daughter, find out when Skinner gave it to her, and corroborate that she got it right after that girl went missing. Linden could simply say that she confronted Skinner about it when they went to the lake house and that when Skinner confessed she told him to get on his knees. Skinner complied but then pulled his pistol and Linden had to shoot him in self defense. Holder could back up her story saying he got to the scene just as it happened. This would have the advantage of being true, except for Skinner pulling his pistol. But there would be no way to dispute that. And an investigation would surely turn up plenty on Skinner; he had to have left some evidence somewhere. Anyone who would give his daughter a ring taken from a dead girl must have made other mistakes.

But the writers of this series consistently have the main characters, Linden and Holder, make unbelievably stupid mistakes in order to create conflict in the story. Either Linden or Holder act or fail to act in incredible ways and this lands them in crisis after crisis. Both characters are emotionally immature, fragile, and unable to act as adults. This creates plenty of tension in the story of course. But it is difficult for me to identify with either character. A certain amount of suspension of disbelief is necessary for viewers to follow any fictional story. But when the writers require too much, viewers find they just cannot buy into the story. This is alright in a comedy of course; there we expect and enjoy it. But not in a drama. It irritates me; I have already invested my time in this seriers and want to see what is going to happen, but not if it is going to keep being so unreal.

very disappointed how easy they let off a serial killer

Warning: Spoilers
For 3 seasons Linden claim to walk high horse, but when it came time to Skinner, she let him off the hook so easy.

The guy murdered so many innocent girls and many more he confessed.

But now the world will never know and he will not get the punishment he deserve, many families still won't get the answers, just because Linden decided to take matters in her own hand. Adrian could have known the truth that his dad was innocent of killing his mom. Also, in future cops don't use their powers like this, some reform could have been brought, but none of that will happen now.

what a let down
jsword484 August 2014
We were SO looking forward season 4 after we watched and enjoyed the first three seasons and were very pleased when it was announced. We sat down to watch and got to the middle of the third episode BUT were so turned off with the overuse of the swearing and specifically Fword that we abandoned the show. Some use of swearing can fit into story but this became so distracting we turned it off. We are not prudes but when the Fword is used as a noun, verb, adverb and adjective it becomes over used and unnecessary and distracts from story. If there was swearing in the first three seasons then it was done sparingly. The continuation of the development of the main characters made them downright unlikeable. The story itself seemed to be moving along but we will never know how it ends.
