I was fortunate enough to check out this film at the inaugural Nightmares Film Fest in Columbus. This one is a blast and you need to check it out on the festival circuit or on VOD as soon as you can.
This is a perfect movie to see cold, so I won't get into any plot details other than it involves a deadly STD virus that turns people into something much worse than a zombie. Based on the plot description, I thought I was going to see a movie in the same vein as Cabin Fever but it's much closer in spirit to Slither or Dead Alive (aka Braindead). I list those two movies because they have a similar sense of fun and taking the audience for a gory ride. Lots of gross-out moments are played for big laughs and you will want to see this with as many people as you can because that is part of the fun - hearing people react to what they just witnessed. Horrible things will happen, bodily fluids will fly, and your friends will shriek, squeal, and try to cover their eyes while laughing at the same time.
I believe that this is the director's first feature and I can't wait to see what else he has up his sleeve. The production is sleek and while the film definitely had a small budget, it never feels restrained by it. The effects are all top notch and the film looks and sounds great. I've been burned by a lot of low budget horror movies on Netflix and they are all similar - they take place in a warehouse or other single location and are further marred by a bad script and acting. This is not one of those films. The script has a great handle on what it sets out to accomplish and the stakes keep rising without any elements getting repetitive. The acting is also good across the board. I really hope it picks up a decent cult following in the years to come
I can't wait to see it again and I already have a short list of people that I need to show it to just so I can sit back and enjoy their reactions / horror.
