As usual, Regina ends up warping a classic tale so that she can be personally involved, but at least this time things maybe interesting.

Warning: Spoilers
At this point in the show, with Dr. Frankenstein, Robin Hood, and now the Wicked Witch of the West, or is it East, should I expect that eventually Marvel characters will begin showing up on the show? Not that I am complaining, but you must admit that while the reboot may send the show on an upswing, it does sometimes feel like someone's fan fiction was stolen and put on the show. Even with that said though, with Zelena, the Wicked Witch, introducing herself, as well as an appearance from one of our favorite characters, maybe there maybe hope for the 2nd half of the season just yet.

Topic 1: Reverse Evolution?

While the curse is naturally one of the biggest things on the townspeople's minds, so is the issue that people are disappearing. And since it seems only one new person, as of now, came back in this bunch of cursed fairy tale characters, this is very troubling. Some of the dwarfs are gone, and then Little John gets kidnapped. But, while the people are lost because their memories have been erased, with us seeing a flying monkey we know what's up. For, from what it seems, there may not be a spell limiting people from crossing Storybrooke, perhaps, but there are flying monkeys on detail and be it a bite or claw scratch, that is all that is needed to turn someone into them. Showing that Zelena has some very specific plan for the townspeople.

Topic 2: Who Cast The Curse?

However, while we may know Zelena cast the curse, the townspeople have nothing but Regina's past to go by. And bad enough the woman sees Henry and the boy has no memory of her, but now she has become a social pariah again. Well, with the exception of Emma trusting her at least. And with this, the two begin to try to unravel the mystery of who cast the curse? The method they try is entrapment for they try to make a memory recovery spell and fail, so they use Grumpy's big mouth to fish the outsider out. But, being that everyone has their magical powers, Zelena slips away undetected, and is given the ability to continue a ruse that she is a simple mid-wife who just so happen to miss the first curse. And yet no one finds it strange that she, seemingly, is the only new kid.

Topic 3: Our Connection

But, perhaps it is time to explain why Zelena is a part of all this, and it was hinted in the overview. You ready for this? Well, Zelena is Cora's older daughter who was abandoned in Oz, and now she has come to see her little sister for jealousy of the privileged life she wasn't given has drove her to the point she wants Regina to feel her pain. Sounds like another misunderstood villain likely to turn good right? But, perhaps this maybe like when we first was introduced to Peter Pan? She could be a foe who seems like a real threat; one who may have had some acquaintance with Rumple, though not as much training; but can exhibit powers which match, or even overwhelm, Regina.

And in Storybrooke 2.0, while she maybe keeping a low profile now, it seems she has plans. One in which the Dark One is involved. Yes, the Dark One, not Mr. Gold. Meaning, there likely isn't going to be some love story between him and Belle since he is Joker level crazy once more. Which, perhaps, maybe the best thing Zelena will bring to this season.

Hunting of the witch

When 'Once Upon a Time' first started it was highly addictive and made the most of a truly great and creative premise. Really loved the idea of turning familiar fairy tales on their heads and putting own interpretations on them and the show early on clearly had clearly had a ball. Watched it without fail every time it came on and it was often a highlight of the week. Which was why it was sad when it ran out of ideas and lost its magic in the later seasons.

The second half of Season 3 showed a lot of promise after "New York City Serenade", which did a great job following one from one of 'Once Upon a Time's' most special episodes "Going Home". This promise shows no signs of diminishing with "Witch Hunt", a fine episode and in the better half of Season 3, a season where for me the episodes ranged from pretty good to brilliant (leaning towards the positive opinion for the episodes that had a mixed reception).

It may lack slightly the shocking revelations and game changing seen in the previous two episodes. There is though in "Witch Hunt" a good deal of plot and character progression and the fresh twists and ideas introduced in "New York City Serenade" are thankfully not wasted and build on the big potential seen before.

Loved that there was a different side to the relationship between Emma and Regina and Robin Hood's role and his chemistry with the Evil Queen in the flashbacks (very engrossing and added a good deal to both characters) were delightful. It doesn't feel like we are going round in circles or ground to a halt.

Can't fault the acting from especially Lana Parrilla, Jennifer Morrison and Sean Maguire. Rebecca Mader continues to cast a spell in the most positive of ways.

Furthermore, "Witch Hunt" is a very handsomely mounted episode visually, the settings and costumes are both colourful and atmospheric, not too dark or garish and never cookie-cutter. It is photographed beautifully too. The music is haunting, ethereal and cleverly used with a memorable main theme. Writing has the right balance of humour, pathos, mystery and intrigue.

In summary, great. 9/10 Bethany Cox
