You Can't Go Home Again!
Hitchcoc11 January 2019
There is so much infighting in the band that was a one hit wonder that it is amazing they accomplished anything. After their adolescent period, things go out of hand and one ended up dead. One of them sold his soul and this led to falling dominoes. There are players all over the place putting things in motion and actions that go back 25 years that have not been settled. But when the young journalist is killed, the son of the man running for police commissioner, it opens the entire can of worms. There are some sore points. One of the group pretty much sealed the death by getting greedy. The subplot involves Banks' continuing contact with Annie who is conflicted because of her daughter and her future. There is also the differences in their ages. We are also introduced to Banks' daughter who is probably going to be causing some turmoil in future episodes.

Who is John Gaunt? Who's your daddy?

Warning: Spoilers
This review relates to parts 1 and 2. Another impressive instalment of DCI Banks, one of my favorite British police/detective dramas (along with Rosemary and Thyme, The Last Detective, Inspector Lynley). Here the main plot line is the mysterious murder of investigative journalist Matt Barber in a Yorkshire chalet, whose father happens to be Jack Barber who is a police officer running for election as Police Commissioner.

One humorous moment is when DCI Banks gets all starry-eyed when he meets his music idol Liz Forbes, who happened to own the chalet that Matt was renting at the time of his murder. Anyway, Liz was the lead singer of 80s band Crystal Kiss, which had a one hit wonder. To add to the intrigue, the caretaker of the chalet was Martin Soames, who was also a member of Crystal Kiss, and who served time for manslaughter of a fellow Crystal Kiss member John Gaunt a few years back.

Anyone, the manslaughter investigation is re-opened, which entangles Jack Barber, who you can imagine will probably have one of the shortest tenures of any elected Police Commissioner thanks to a major cover- up which is revealed at the end.

One motif of DCI Banks is a fancy Yorkshire house at the center of the storyline, usually in the Dales somewhere. Here it's the house of Liz.

Who's your daddy...wow...we learn who is father of DS Cabbot's daughter. It was a surprise to me and also to the father himself, who had no idea! DS Cabbot and the lawyer father had an affair (he was married with kids at the time). Also, we are introduced to Tracy, DCI Banks' daughter (played by Lily Loveless).

DC Tariq Lang (Danny Rahim) makes his debut appearance and I think he appeared until the end of season. In the wake of Brexit hopefully he can make a comeback so the producers can make a point.

Piece of My Heart: Part 2
Prismark103 August 2021
Warning: Spoilers
DCI Banks just wants to tell DS Cabot about his feelings for her.

The interruptions range from his daughter coming home from university to Banks finding the identity of Cabot's baby.

As for the murder of Matt Barber.

Everyone is after a tape that could solve the mystery of how the band member of a 80s pop group died.

I did like how Banks go all the suspects into a recording studio, no wonder someone confessed all in such sweet harmony.

A disappointment.

I like these in general, though it's a cool like. I think they're kind of flat and uninspired, but I watch them. This one, however, has almost nothing going for it. I suppose that I'm exposing my prejudice here, but I find that any show that has a rock band theme as the main story line loses me. The characters are usually one-dimensional and self-obsessed with shallow motivations and goals. It has been true (to me, at least) whenever I see one. I don't remember any specific episodes to cite, but I know that I'll probably be unsatisfied. This was no different. It's dullDullDULL. I may stop watching these altogether.
