Hit-man Kiefer Sutherland confesses to priest John Hurt for the first time in 35 years
2 December 2014 | by (United States) – See all my reviews

"The Confession" runs 63 minutes. It features two topnotch actors in Kiefer Sutherland as a hit-man and John Hurt as a Catholic priest. Sutherland is confessing to Hurt. In the process, there are some tough flashbacks of several hits.

This is a neo-noir but it's really a throwback to the b-noirs of the forties or to those short Inner Sanctum mysteries with Lon Chaney that have twists in them. The colors in this movie are very subdued, with hardly a bright red appearing, and that may be only in stained glass inside the church. There are no outdoor scenes to speak of, just some establishing shots of the exterior of an office building in one flashback. The movie is split about evenly between the confession and the flashbacks.

Writer-director Brad Mirman gave us here an excellent drama for adults, meaning anyone of any age who can appreciate the issues that are raised, the conflicts that occur and the depth at which they are addressed, without for one second insulting our intelligence or compromising the material. There is tension and suspense all the way.

Once again the fine acting should be noted. John Hurt always delivers. He is one of the British greats, and Britain has produced so many fine actors. I've praised Kiefer Sutherland's work before, and once again he shows that he is a really fine actor. He holds his own with Hurt every step of the way in his capacity to get into the character and show a range of emotions.
